An agreement for Marseille to sign Dimitri Payet from West Ham is still "miles away", Sky Sports News HQ has been told.

L'Equipe says the playmaker will pocket £6m-a-year if a deal is finalised.

The Premier League outfit have held extensive talks with their counterparts at Marseille about the transfer of the wantaway France global.

However, Ferdinand feels the player has disrespected the club and its fans with his actions, and he openly supports Slaven Bilic's approach to the matter.

But Sky report that "time is running out" and that an agreement for Payet to return to his former club is still "miles away".

Langley's position was that the state cremation law and the aborted baby burial requirement did not conflict because "fetal tissue is not human remains" under Texas law.

Marseille have failed with three previous bids, but have now offered £22m plus £3m in add-ons, while West Ham have dropped their demands of a £35m price-tag to £26m with add-ons.

Indeed, since Payet's self-inflicted exile West Ham's form has actually improved, following up a 3-0 win against Crystal Palace with a 3-1 victory at Middlesbrough last weekend.

They will now have the likes of Stoke and West Brom in their sights, and you can't rule out West Ham replicating last season's seventh place finish in the league this term, although they are eight points behind Everton, who currently occupy that position.

In other West Ham transfer news, the club have clinched a big-name deal despite being outbid by their Premier League rivals' £65,000-a-week offer.

It has been the transfer saga of the window - but it could be reaching its end.
