Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has warned the nuclear threat'once again seems real and fears'it looks like the world is preparing for war

Mr Gorbachev, who detailed his own efforts at denuclearisation during the dying days of the Cold War in the 1980s, issued a stark warning of a world where weapons of mass destruction were becoming cheaper and more readily available.

Mikhail Gorbachev - who rose to power in the final years of the Cold War and was the president of the soviet state when it dissolved in 1991 - wrote an opinion piece that he's anxious about world leaders' militaristic tones and the rate at which nations are ramping up their arsenals.

"It looks like the political world is in the grip of an illness, even epidemics of broken liabilities and promises, demagogical slogans and mutual accusations", he notes. At the same time, he writes of the buildup on Russia's borders: "NATO and Russian forces and weapons" are now in close proximity "as if to shoot point-blank".

Mikhail Gorbachev has a deep knowledge about the crisis in the worldwide relationships of two superpowers, Russian Federation and the USA.

He added that the most pressing challenge that the world faces today is reversing the "militarisation of politics". "Commentators and TV personalities are joining the bellicose chorus". "Although an important and urgent task, it is not enough to serve as a basis, a pivot of normal relations that can develop into partner relations in future", he argues.

Sekera scores 2 goals, leads surging Oilers past Sharks 4-1
Patrick Maroon checked Couture behind the Sharks net to dislodge the puck, which bounced around before it came to Connor McDavid. But Oilers forward Anton Slepyshev got back to disrupt Carpenter, whose shot went wide to the left of the net.

"The focus should once again be on preventing war, phasing out the arms race, and reducing weapons arsenals". Moreover, with the rise of the far-right in Europe, and a bloody civil war going on in Syria which involves numerous countries, it seems that the world is inching closer to a conflict.

"Not a single global problem of today, either poverty, ecology, migration, population growth or scarcity of resources, can be solved by military means".

I urge the members of the U.N. Security Council - the body that bears primary responsibility for worldwide peace and security - to take the first step.

Gorbachev said Trump and Putin have a special responsibility to condemn nuclear war because the US and Russian Federation control more than 90 percent of the world's nuclear arsenals.

Relived of these fears, people will feel "freer", he believes. "This should become a common goal", he said. Many other problems would then be easier to resolve.
