Mexico's government on Saturday rebuked Israel for a tweet by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that appeared to applaud U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to build a border wall with Mexico to keep out illegal immigrants.

It wasn't immediately clear what the pair talked about - or how cordially they greeted one another - but the call follows growing tensions between the North American neighbors.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto said Thursday he has canceled his planned trip to Washington, D.C., next week to meet with Donald Trump after the USA president's insistence that Mexico cover the cost of a new border wall.

Before the president arrived in Philadelphia, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto announced that he was canceling a planned visit with Trump.

Customs and Border Protection is a division of the Department of Homeland Security that manages United States borders and entry points. "I regret and reject the decision of the U.S.to build the wall", he had said.

Trump also tweeted that the USA has a United States dollars 60 billion trade deficit with Mexico.

However, Trump has since claimed the pair reached a mutual agreement to cancel the meeting, The Hill reported. But Trump never stopped insisting that the funds for the wall would come from Mexico, even if he eventually began tweaking his explanation of how it would happen.

Brad Jaffy on NBC News pointed out that Mexico is the third largest supplier of imported goods to the United States, including cars, machinery, food, wine and beer.

It is not known at this time if Farhadi will be able to attend the ceremony. The Daily Dot has reached out to Farhadi's representation for comment.

"An America that is strong and prosperous at home is a nation that can lead overseas but you cannot and should not do so alone", May told the gathering.

Earlier, Trump had said that if Mexico was not going to pay for the wall, there was no use of the two presidents meeting next week as scheduled.

"Build that wall" was one of Mr Trump's campaign rally slogans.

While the canceled meeting was the direct result of Trump's challenge, the administration said it wants to maintain communications with its southern neighbor.

On Thursday, White House spokesman Sean Spicer sent the Mexican peso falling to its low for the day when he told reporters Mr Trump wanted a 20 per cent tax on Mexican imports to pay for the wall.

The policy has become a clarion call for the US right and far-right - the core of Trump's support.

"Mexico gives and demands respect as the completely sovereign nation that we are", Pena Nieto said.

Mexico and the USA will be stuck at an impasse unless they solve Mr Trump's "unacceptable" demand of payment for the border wall, Mexico's Economy Minister Ildefonso Guajardo said.
