AHCA CBO score makes GOP rush to repeal Obamacare laughable

A repeal of Obamacare was one of Trump's leading campaign promises a year ago.

"I don't know how we get to 50 at the moment", McConnell said during a Wednesday interview with Reuters. But that's the goal.

That's prompted increased talk of possibly breaking out a less ambitious bill aimed at keeping insurance markets stable over the next two years, Republicans say. Now Republicans in the Senate have to decide how to make their version different.

On the other hand, he said, prospects for passage of major tax legislation were "pretty good". While this too will be hard, McConnell said, it is "not in my view quite as challenging as healthcare".

House Speaker Paul Ryan said that the figures confirm that the aim of the proposal is to reduce the deficit and the premiums that patients must pay.

Republicans on Capitol Hill are preparing for the release of the Congressional Budget Office's analysis of the GOP health care bill that passed the House earlier this month.

The Senate designees did not include Finance Chairman Mike Hall, who has expressed concern about predicted budget holes in coming years, or Senator Robert Karnes, who led the Senate's Select Committee on Tax Reform. "I don't find that any less egregious than the former piece of legislation".

"I just want to take this opportunity to thank this chamber. I think it helps the Medicaid states", McCain said.

If the Senate passes a healthcare bill, lawmakers would have to work out the differences in the House and Senate versions and pass a compromise bill before it could go to Trump for his signature. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, said.

North Carolina eventually repealed much of its 2016 bathroom law after great political pressure and boycotts. "I would love to see this move forward with some type of agreement where we can move forward".

Republicans face a tricky balancing act.

The report found that under the House measure, people in some regions with pre-existing medical conditions or the seriously ill "would ultimately be unable to purchase" robust coverage at premiums comparable to today's prices, "if they could purchase at all".

A skeptical Sen. Douglas Facemire, a Braxon County Democrat, said the tax increases and decreases amount to "a net zero gain to our citizens" and put future state finances at risk.

McConnell in the past has promised to undo Obamacare "root and branch".

The House plan would exempt sales tax for veterans retirement and Social Security income - as would the most recent version of the Senate plan.

The Republican leader compared the effort to solving a Rubik's Cube. Twenty-three million fewer Americans will have insurance by 2026 under the House-approved bill, which is hardly better than the 24 million in coverage losses predicted under the initial version.

Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., on Tuesday referred to the latest meeting as "part of our continuing three-day-per-week, hour-and-a-half focus group" of 52 GOP senators working on the health bill. Republican senators have said they're moving in their own direction.

McConnell expressed optimism two parties can band together to pass legislation funding the federal government in the fiscal year starting on October 1.

Most of those losing coverage would be beneficiaries of Medicaid, the health care program for poor and disabled people, though people buying individual policies or getting coverage at work would also become uninsured.
