Later, the victim revealed that she was sexually abused by her stepfather regularly while her mother was away for work.

She told her mother that she had been repeatedly raped by her stepfather, who had warned her not to say anything.

But a court allowed the abortion to go ahead because of the rare circumstances surrounding the case.

The Indian Express said the victim's mother wanted the accused to be set free as he had apologised and that she had other children to take care of. After the 20 weeks, Indian law stipulates that terminations are only allowed when the pregnancy is threatening the life of the mother or the baby. The girl is in a Rohtak hospital in the northern state of Haryana, 65km from New Delhi. He was arrested a week ago following a complaint filed by the mother based on her daughter's statement.

However, in this particular case the doctors have made a decision to abort the foetus as normal delivery is also equally perilous.

Schumer also said he supports calls to block a nomination until a special prosecutor is appointed to take over the investigation. Barack Obama opposed same-sex marriage in 2006 as well, and didn't officially change his position for another six years .

Now that the girl has won the rights to abortion, the procedure will take place any time now.

It has been established that India's Supreme Court has received several petitions from rape victims in recent months requesting terminations and each case has been referred to a panel of medical experts.

In the latest case of sexual violence against women to shock the country, the 20-year-old victim was allegedly kidnapped and drugged by her ex-boyfriend, named by Indian media as Sumit Kumar, and his friend.

In a particularly brutal case, a postmortem examination found the woman had been raped with sharp objects.

Mr Singh said the victim's post-mortem report showed she had been drugged or sedated during the horrific attack. Her face had also been smashed with a brick, and a auto ran over her body so she could not be identified, according to a report in the Hindustan Times.
