Loosen Up: NFL to allow some flair in celebrations

Roger Goodell and the National Football League are set to loosen their death grip on touchdown celebrations, according to USA Today's Tom Pelissero.

It appears at least one person is listening. But miming weapons, offensive gestures and sexually suggestive actions such as twerking are among those that will remain banned.

Now the interesting part will be whether owners - a group which skews rather older than players - are willing to go along.

Even Commissioner Roger Goodell said he was looking forward to seeing what players would do with their new-found freedom of expression. Playoff games will also use 10-minute time blocks in overtime, but won't end in ties.

It appears that the National Football League cares about fun again. Now, players will be able to express themselves a bit more in celebrations, which should lead to much more memorable moments following a touchdown. First, the league will remove several restrictions on player celebrations. Over the past five years, with the 15-minute period in use, the league has averaged about one tie game each season.

The second change brings relief to fans and players alike.

The rule gives teams more roster flexibility and allows key players to come back for critical late-season games if they suffer an early-season injury.

However, the release of 1,184 players (37 per team) all at once will make it more taxing for front offices to sort through their cuts, as well as all those released by others who they may want to add to their team. Last season the league adjusted the rule as well, not requiring the teams to identify the player designated to return in advance.
