WTA CEO unhappy with Sharapova's French Open snub

Former Wimbledon champion Pat Cash hopes the All England Club will "stay strong" and not offer Maria Sharapova a wildcard entry into this year's championships.

"As you talk with players, it's very controversial".

"It is not for me to question that (CAS) decision".

The news will be a big blow to former world No.1 Sharapova.

"I think well done to them (FFT)".

Sharapova is now ranked No. 211 in the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) world rankings. CAS later reduced the sanction to 15 months. "She might be very disappointed", Giudicelli said.

Giudicelli said he personally told Sharapova of his ruling during a phone call on Tuesday. The French Open begins May 28.

The WTA is not contemplating any change to rules governing wild cards for players returning from a suspension.

The way things are now, it is up to each individual tournament to elect whether to invite players under such circumstances.

WTA CEO Steve Simon released a statement on Wednesday responding to the wild-card announcements for the 2017 French Open.

"She has complied with the sanction imposed", Simon said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Real title win "an incredible feeling" for Zidane
Tottenham Hotspur target Isco has assured the Real Madrid fans that he will stay on with the Spanish champions beyond the summer . But Chelsea will be reluctant to part with their star man after he was awarded the Premier League's Player of the Year.

"She's smart and savvy", American Shriver, who won 21 grand slam women's doubles titles, said on ESPN.

Jose Morais, GQ Portugal: Roland Garros will have neither Roger Federer, nor Maria Sharapova nor Serena Williams competing for the first time since 1997. "Of course I felt some pressure", he said.

The Russian, 30, was widely expected to be fast-tracked into the Grand Slam tournament which she has won twice before.

He then rode on his hot run to take away the trophies in Indian Wells and Miami, two ATP 1000 Masters, before he skipped some tournaments into the clay season, and finally, the Roland Garros.

Sharapova secured a place in Wimbledon qualifying earlier this week with victory over Christina McHale in the first round of the Italian Open. However, the Russian superstar was not able to garner enough points to earn a direct qualification for this year's Roland Garros, starting 22 May.

Sharapova announced previous year that she was tested positive for heart drug meld onium at the Australian Open, which is one of the banned drugs by WADA.

Melodium was only banned at the beginning of 2016 but Sharapova said she had been taking it for over 10 years as she was magnesium deficient and had recorded several irregular electrocardiography (EKG) tests.

President of the French Tennis Federation Bernard Giudicelli Ferrandini, said: "No-one can deny her the two titles, but according to the rules, we couldn't give her a wildcard".

A decision as to whether she is granted a main draw spot will be taken on June 20.

She was given wild cards at Stuttgart and Madrid before the Italian Open this week. She was a past champion at all three.

"I wanted to do it for myself, but also for all these people", she added.
