Troops pull out of Brazil capital; president under pressure

It is now 10 days since the latest in a growing list of corruption crises engulfed Temer's administration, when a leading businessman directly implicated him in bribery and the obstruction of justice. Brazil's president ordered federal troops to restore order in the country's capital following the evacuation of some ministries during clashes between police and protesters who are seeking the leader's ouster.

The embattled politician ordered the military deployed to help quell the massive protests against his tenure Wednesday - protests that turned violent as demonstrators clashed with riot police and smashed the windows of some public buildings. Calling out the army was sharply criticized by the president's opposition and some allies alike.

Police responded with rubber bullets and tear gas.

According to local media, protesters scuffled with police while using portable toilets as barricades, as well as setting fire to the Agriculture Ministry, forcing the building to be evacuated.

But that's not Temer's only immediate concern.

The issue of troops is deeply sensitive in a country that lived under military rule from 1964-1985.

After playing a key role throughout last year's impeachment of President Dilma Rousseff, Brazil's judiciary finds itself in the eye of the storm once more, caught between the opposing demands of the public and the government.

Boehner: Trump has been 'complete disaster'
The GOP-led House narrowly passed a bill earlier this month. "President? I just never envisioned him in that role", he said. Boehner resigned from Congress in October 2015 and has no regrets about his decision to leave Capitol Hill.

Some experts say government-backed measures to liberalize the labor market and raise the pension age have little chance of being passed until a new government is installed after fresh elections.

Police cordons held back protesters from advancing on the modernistic Congress building where the main ally in Temer's coalition, the PSDB party, met to discuss whether to continue backing him and prepare for a post-Temer transition.

Speaking Thursday night, Jereissati declined to give open support for Temer remaining in office. Folha reported that the Workers Party, which publicly is demanding direct elections, touting former President Lula da Silva-also facing trial on corruption charges-as the likely front-runner, is behind the scenes negotiating with other bourgeois parties on a compromise candidate to replace Temer through a congressional vote.

"It will be very hard for these reforms to be approved now", said Carlos Melo, a political scientist with Insper, a Sao Paulo business school.

"Temer can't stay and these reforms that trample on our rights cannot advance". A ruling is expected in early June.
