Trump Asked 4 Top Officials to Bury Russia Probe

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats prepares to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday

Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats prepares to testify on Capitol Hill in Washington Tuesday

On Monday night, The Washington Post reported that Trump separately asked Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, and Mike Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, to publicly deny that there was any evidence of collusion between his presidential campaign and the Kremlin. Both Coats and Rogers denied the president's request and they are now coming forward with these very serious allegations.

The media has focused in on one key moment in Tuesday's House Intelligence hearing, when former CIA director John Brennan told lawmakers he saw intelligence indicating contacts between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation that was "worthy" of further FBI investigation.

During testimony before the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday, Coats refused to comment on The Washington Post report.

"The White House does not confirm or deny unsubstantiated claims based on illegal leaks from anonymous individuals", a White House spokesperson said.

In part 2, of a Facebook Live interview with attorney Caroline Fredrickson, President of the American Society of Law and Policy, a "progressive" body of constitutional scholars, I asked about the various over-arching issues in the investigation in which the special counsel Robert Mueller and Congress are pursuing.

Subsequently, reports emerged that Trump in several conversations with Comey had asked for his personal loyalty, which Comey declined to offer.

Not even a week later, the story about the Comey memos has taken a more serious turn; it is no longer about a conflict of credibility between former FBI Director James Comey and President Donald Trump.

Government officials are barred from participating in matters involving former employers for a year unless they receive a waiver to do so under a federal ethics regulation.

Justice Department ethics experts Tuesday cleared Robert Mueller to lead the Russian Federation probe, The Washington Post reported.

These include the Maute group, which is based near Marawi, hundreds of kilometers to the north of the Abu Sayyaf strongholds. Meanwhile, photographs purporting to show buildings aflame and black flags raised above public buildings hit social media.

The unusual request was written in a memo by Comey, who kept meticulous notes on his meetings with Trump.

The report published on May 22 mentions Director of National Intelligence Daniel Coats and Director of the National Security Agency Michael S Rogers, who Trump reportedly approached separately.

Rogers is scheduled to meet with the House Armed Services committee later on Tuesday.

"You haven't discussed it?" he asked.

Coats said he didn't know if the president had.

On Sunday, McCain criticized Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's recent visit to the White House, calling him "nothing but a propagandist" and a "stooge" of Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that Lavrov "had no business in the Oval Office".

Coats, 74, represented northeast IN in the U.S. House during the 1980s and was a senator from IN in the 1990s and again from 2011 through 2016.

Mueller is in control of the total staff size he will need to conduct the investigation, but he is required to put together an operational budget overseen by Justice officials, Lofthus said.

Coats told lawmakers that he did not have any documents describing his conversation with the president.
