Trump calls for peace as he lands in Israel

President Donald Trump doesn't expect to emerge from his two-day visit to Israel and the West Bank with a peace deal in hand, but he is the latest president to arrive here with the lofty goal in mind.

That realization led to the conference the president addressed on Monday, and to what Trump described in Israel on Monday as a new will for peace throughout the region.

In an article titled, 'Parochial Israeli Reception Makes Even Vulgar President Trump Look Statesmanlike', writer Yossi Verter said that Israel's welcome to the USA president was a "provincially embarrassing display of provinciality." and that by the end of the reception even Trump - "a coarse, vulgar man with no sense of ceremony" ended up looking statesmanlike.

"So many young, beautiful, innocent people living and enjoying their lives murdered by evil losers", Trump said after meeting Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the occupied West Bank.

He is looking for a path forward in his meetings with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas - or at least an appearance of progress. The last talks between the Israelis and Palestinians, led by former US secretary of state John Kerry, broke down in April 2014 after around a year of largely fruitless discussion.

"The United States and Israel can declare with one voice that Iran must never be allowed to possess a nuclear weapon - never ever - and must cease its deadly funding, training and equipping of terrorists and militias", Trump said in remarks at President Reuven Rivlin's residence here yesterday.

Later on Tuesday Mr Trump returned to Jerusalem, visiting the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.

Trump says firing 'nut job' Comey took off pressure
However, at a combative news conference Thursday, he fell short in trying to resolve questions about investigations into his campaign and his first four months in office.

U.S. President Donald Trump talked up the prospects of peace between Israelis and Palestinians on Tuesday, saying he believed both sides were committed to an historic deal, but he offered no concrete proposals on how to get there. And when I say terrific, it encompasses everything. He flew to Tel Aviv direct from Saudi Arabia, where at a summit on Sunday he urged Arab and Muslim leaders to work together to "drive out" Islamist extremists.

Trump's Air Force One flight from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to Tel Aviv, Israel on Monday was reportedly a first for a U.S. president, largely because flights between Saudi Arabia and Israel don't happen.

MK Hilik Bar (Zionist Union), chairman of the Caucus for a Two-State Solution, called for Trump to launch a regional peace process, including the Palestinians. "The Arab world will not accept a regional agreement or normalization with Israel without solving the conflict between us and the Palestinians, period".

"I've heard it's one of the toughest deals of all", Trump said.

"I hope", Trump said after the meeting, without elaborating.

"We want to work with honest intentions to achieve peace", Trump said, adding that both sides have promised to seek a peace deal.

During the next two days, there will be many more iconic images of President Trump in the Holy Land. "Our problem is the occupation and the settlements and the fact that Israel does not recognize the Palestinian state".
