Trump, French president share intense handshake

Trump handshake showdown France's Macron just won't let

In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump said he thought Le Pen was the "strongest on borders", and "the strongest on what's been going on in France", though he stopped short of endorsing her.

As the world cameras watched, Macron held on tight to Trump's notorious power grip as the two men sat next to each other, the Frenchman's mouth clenched and eyes firmly fixed at the tycoon's squinted stare.

U.S. President Donald Trump met his match in a handshake showdown with France's new president, Emmanuel Macron. "Congratulations, great job", Trump said.

The handshake between US President Donald Trump and French President Emmmanuel Macron started friendly enough.

During a meeting of world leaders at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, the U.S. president appeared to be eager to greet his French counterpart, however, Mr Macron made a bee-line for the German Chancellor. But this time, it was Mr Trump - not Mr Macron - who tried to back out first.

But a French official is quoting Trump as telling the victor, President Emmanuel Macron (eh-mahn-yoo-EHL' mah-KROHN'), that he favored him all along.

'Dancing with the Stars' crowns new champ after surprising season
And this is the first time personally that I've vibed out and turned on Fifth Harmony on my own because I love the songs so much. Seeing you transform and seeing your family celebrate your shine was the absolute most fulfilling part of this season.

As if Trump wasn't enough for his debut on the world stage in Brussels, Macron met another of the European Union's most troublesome strategic partners - Recep Tayyip Erdoğan - before attending a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, all as an hors d'oeuvre to Friday and Saturday's G7 summit in Taormina. But Macron holds firm, and even seems to edge Trump's hand toward him in this most awkward game of worldwide tug-of-war.

This was an important moment for Macron, who during his campaign took a decisive stance against Trump's dismissive attitude toward climate change by inviting American scientists to France.

Macron stands outside greeting several diplomats, Trump among them, sharing brief handshakes and smiles in typical political fashion.

The 70-year-old Republican president had never publicly spoken about Macron before the elections, it was reported.

The shake went on for a while, with Macron clearly leading it. However, he said he was not explicitly endorsing Le Pen.
