A suspect has been arrested in the killing of a 33-year-old Australian tourist who was beaten to death just outside a hotel in San Francisco's Polk Gulch neighborhood, authorities said Saturday.

Police say Bates got into an argument with two men around 2 a.m. Friday outside the Da Vinci Villa Hotel in the Russian Hill neighborhood.

Two suspects were detained shortly after the altercation and Mr Talkoff said homicide detectives are investigating their involvement in the fight.

He was pronounced dead upon arrival at hospital.

Bill Maher Apologizes After Using N-Word On His Show
After a night to think about it, Bill Maher decided to make a very rare apology, which so far seems to be enough for D.L. Sasse now says he regrets not speaking up when Maher made the joke. "Work in the fields?" he said, raising his palms.

San Francisco Police Department spokeswoman Giselle Talkoff said Mr Bate was involved in "a verbal altercation which became physical" outside the Da Vinci Villa hotel in the Russian Hill neighbourhood about 2am Friday local time.

According to Australian news media, Bate was from Woolner.

Mr Bate, originally from Ocean Grove in Victoria, had recently been living in Darwin and working for SGS Australia as an analytical chemist. "Why?' We opened the door, they looked at us- nope, we're not the guys so they moved along". They believe Bate may have been at a local bar in the hours leading up to the fight.
