Attorney General Sessions' Testimony To Senate Panel Will Be Public

Susan Collins, R-Maine, a member of the intelligence committee, referring to the existence of any recordings.

Sessions announced Friday that he actively sought the opportunity to testify and announced Monday that it would be before the public, not behind closed doors. His failure to disclose meetings with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak forced him to later amend his testimony and added fuel to the Russia intrigue swirling around Washington. Sources told CNN last week that the attorney general offered to resign after a series of heated exchanges with the President over his decision to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe.

Sessions was a leading opponent of the Senate's 2013 immigration overhaul, which he called too permissive.

Dianne Feinstein told Rosenstein that she believes it would be "catastrophic" if special counsel Robert Mueller were fired on the orders of President Donald Trump.

Trump's aides have dodged questions about whether conversations relevant to the Russian Federation investigation have been recorded, and so has the president.

Media reports have indicated that Sessions was involved in pushing President Donald Trump to fire former FBI Director James Comey in May.

"That's just not going to be acceptable", said Senator Ron Wyden, a Democrat on the committee.

Sessions to appear before Senate intelligence committee
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was in for sharp questioning by senators on the Senate Intelligence committee Tuesday. The Senate panel is investigating allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Senator Lankford, agreed the panel needed to hear any tapes, if they exist.

As the White House's political crisis over the Russian Federation investigation has grown, the attorney general has laid low.

Stephen Gillers, a professor of law at New York University, said Sessions has not answered why he played a role in Comey's firing given that he had recused himself from the Russian Federation investigation. These probes have led to bad optics for the administration, if nothing else, after James Comey said in March that the feds are looking into whether the President's campaign colluded with these efforts.

It comes as political intrigue pulses through the U.S. capital following explosive testimony by Comey before the same panel last week, and as Trump has expressed frustrations with Sessions, one of his earliest high-profile campaign backers.

They will also likely inquire about any discussions Sessions had with President Trump before Comey's dismissal.

After the meeting, Comey told Sessions that he did not want to be alone anymore with Trump and "it can't happen that you get kicked out of the room and the president talks to me".

If questions arise about what matters Sessions should stay away from, he said, a career official in Rosenstein's office is consulted. National Security Agency Director Michael Rogers and Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence, both declined to discuss their own Trump communications during a hearing last week.
