Top GOP lawmaker wounded; gunfire at baseball practice

Hours after a shooting left five people injured on Wednesday, including Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, organizers announced that the game was on, saying that the best way to honor them was "to play the game as scheduled" at Nationals Park.

Scalise, 51, is among four people shot by a gunman at a House Republican baseball practice Wednesday in the Washington suburbs.

"The bullet travelled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding".

Doctors "fully expect him to walk", Sava said, "and hopefully run". According to the medical staff, Scalise arrived in critical condition with a "imminent risk of death". The congressman underwent another surgery Saturday, and the hospital said he was more responsive and speaking with family.

Scalise, of Louisiana, underwent surgery Wednesday night to fix a broken hip and another procedure to stem heavy bleeding. His risk of death is "substantially lower" than it was when he was admitted to the hospital on Wednesday, and "I think that an excellent recovery is a good possibility", Sava said. Griner remains hospitalized at MedStar Hospital after getting shot in the ankle, and Sava described her in good condition.

There was a loud ovation when Special Agent David Bailey, one of the Capitol Police officers injured in the attack, threw out the first pitch.

The 66-year-old suspect from Belleville, Illinois, was a volunteer for Senator Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign but whether he was politically motivated is still unclear, investigators said.

Hodgkinson told the YMCA on Tuesday that he wanted to cancel his membership because he was moving, the YMCA said in a statement. While trying to drive away from that confrontation, the report said, Hodgkinson used a pocket knife to cut a seat belt.

"By playing tonight we are showing the world that we will not be intimidated by threats, acts of violence or assaults on our democracy", said President Donald Trump, appearing on the park's giant screen but not attending.

The event took on a decidedly more serious tone, with players from both teams kneeling together in a moment of prayer before hitting the diamond.

Capitol Hill Police officers stand watch outside the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill in Washington, Thursday, June 15, 2017, a day after a gunman opened fire on a lawmakers playing baseball and wounded House Maj. The Congressional Baseball Game is a tradition aimed at bringing both parties closer through baseball while raising funds for charities throughout the D.C.

The shot fired at Scalise left perhaps hundreds of bullet fragments internally, many of which may never be removed because surgery might be more unsafe than leaving them in place, Sava said.

Colleagues who visited Scalise, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, sounded generally upbeat, but spoke more in terms of hopes than the confident predictions of the immediate aftermath a day earlier.
