Curfew, restrictions continue in Kashmir

Protests erupt in India's Kashmir after militant commander is killed

Protests erupt in India's Kashmir after militant commander is killed

Authorities have placed separatist leaders Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Shabir Shah, Ayaz Akbar, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Shahid-ul-Islam and others under house arrest to prevent them from leading any anti-India demonstration.

After the shooting, locals thronged to the area and began pelting stones at security forces, unrest that eventually lead to protests throughout the valley.

Yasin Malik, the chief of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), was on Sunday arrested from his residence, the police said.

The situation in Kashmir remains tense but under control with authorities imposing curfew-like restrictions in most parts of the valley, fearing that the killing of Sabzar Bhat would spark trouble in the state.

Two suspected militants were killed in the same region on Friday, the Indian army said.

A civilian was also killed allegedly in cross firing between militants and security forces during the encounter yesterday.

In Srinagar, the restrictions have been imposed in seven police station areas, officials said.

Boccabella said Paterno "could have made that phone call without so much as getting his hands dirty". Curley, Schultz and Spanier denied they were told the encounter in the shower was sexual in nature.

After Bhat and another militant were killed in a gunbattle with soldiers on Saturday, large-scale protests and clashes erupted across the region, leaving one civilian dead and dozens of others injured.

Authorities have suspended class work today in Colleges and Higher Secondary Schools (HHSs) in Srinagar as a precautionary measure, though Universities and other primary and middle schools also wore a deserted look as students preferred to stay indoors, in view of the strike call.

Restrictions under Section 144 CrPc have been imposed in Ganderbal, Badgam, Bandipora and Kupwara in north Kashmir while in south Kashmir, the districts of Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama and Shopian saw unprecedented security arrangements in place to ensure minimum attendance at Bhat's funeral prayers. Situation is completely under control.

Sabzar Ahmad Bhat, who succeeded Burhan Wani, was killed along with another militant in Tral area.

Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti was holding a meeting of top security and intelligence officials to ensure that the situation does not flare up like it did in the aftermath of Burhan Wani's killing a year ago when 94 civilian protesters were killed in the almost six-month long unrest that followed.

He said there was a report about a stray incident of stone-pelting on a CRPF camp in Tahab area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district. His death led to months of protests and a security lockdown during which at least 90 people were killed and thousands injured.

Intra-Kashmir train services remained suspended on Monday for the second consecutive day.
