DA at the crossroads over Helen Zille

Helen Zille

The former head of South Africa's main opposition party faced suspension from party activities on Saturday after tweets in which she said colonialism had some positive results.

While the dispute over Zille began with her controversial tweets on colonialism, the issue has now escalated into one over the direction of the DA.

In a statement published on her Twitter account Zille said there was a contradiction in the letter she received from party chair, James Selfe, and DA leader Mmusi Maimane's announcement. "And they will have to ensure a three-line whip and DA members will have to vote her out", Fakir said.

When Maimane called a media conference earlier, he stated that the federal executive had "resolved Zille be suspended from all party-related activities until such time as her disciplinary hearing is concluded".

Although Ms. Zille, a former journalist and anti-apartheid activist, continues to serve as the premier of Western Cape Province, she could face expulsion at the end of the disciplinary hearing.

"She has. humiliated the province and its people with her continuous Twitter attack on people of colour", ANC Western Cape acting chairperson, Khaya Magaxa, said in a statement.

Maimane strongly condemned Zille's actions and said that she had continued to damage the party with various pieces of communication that sought to undermine what the party was trying to achieve.

The DA responded by giving Zille 72 hours to respond. "What I have not agreed to do is plead guilty to charges of misconduct‚ which I never committed".

Her suspension was announced by DA leader Mmusi Maimane. Reasons stated by Maimane for the party's federal executive to suspend Zille was not the full story, she said.

The fedex will make its final decision once Zille had made her representations‚ the party said. Zille tweeted that the DA had now changed its suspension statement.

The party's Federal Legal Commission began investigating tweets Zille posted in March after she claimed colonialism was not "only negative".

The latest statement comes after Zille accused the party of bullying her into incriminating herself or resigning on Saturday afternoon.
