Dangerous heat wave to scorch the Southwestern US

THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT

THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT

An excessive heat warning will be in force in the San Gabriel Mountains from 11 a.m. Saturday to 9 p.m. Wednesday, in the Antelope Valley from 11 a.m. Sunday to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and in the Santa Clarita Valley from Monday morning through Wednesday night.

The heat will be on "high" in the Desert Southwest the next several days.

A heat advisory means people can be affected by the warmer weather if precautions are not taken.

"There is absolutely no doubt we will be near all-time highs with this heat wave, with the hottest and most unsafe temperatures expected Monday through Wednesday", the National Weather Service in Phoenix said, offering heat safety tips.

Temperatures along the coast and in the western valleys will be somewhat cooler, but still 5 to 10 degrees above average, according to the weather service. That could rival the all-time high temperature of 122 degrees set at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport in 1990.

Congressman Williams staff member one of multiple shot in Virginia
Jeff Flake of Arizona, who was practicing with the House members, described hearing "dozens and dozens and dozens of shots fired". Reps Joe Barton , Kevin Brady , Mike Conaway and Williams - that attended the practice.

Nighttime temperatures are expected to be around 60 degrees. Forecasters warn that overnight temperatures won't bring much relief. Concord and Livermore are among the inland locales expected to see temperatures in excess of 100 degrees.

The hot conditions are labeled as a classic pre-monsoon heat event for the Southwest region, NWS said.

It said scorching temperatures will combine with atmospheric inversions, which trap pollution near the ground, to cause persistently poor air quality at least through early next week.

The hot weather will increase the risk of heat-related illness and anyone working or spending time outdoors would be more susceptible, as will senior citizens, children and those unaccustomed to the heat.

In California, triple-digit heat will engulf Bakersfield, Fresno and Sacramento starting this weekend and continuing into next week.
