Former NBA player Dennis Rodman arrives in North Korea

Pyongyang, June14:A plane carrying University of Virginia student Otto Warmbier, who had been detained in North Korea for 17 months and was in a coma for most of it, touched down in Cincinnati on Tuesday night.

Otto Warmbier, a 22-year-old college student detained and imprisoned in North Korea, is carried off of an airplane at Lunken Airport in Cincinnati on Tuesday. An ambulance took Otto Warmbier from the airport to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

The University of Virginia confirmed that the 22-year-old student is in a coma.

Surrounded by North Korean guards, Warmbier delivered a highly scripted "confession" that appeared to have been written for him, and after an hour-long sham trial in March 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with hard labor.

PYONGYANG-Dennis Rodman, the former National Basketball Association bad boy who has palled around with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, flew to Pyongyang on Tuesday on a trip he says he hopes will "open a door" for his former "Celebrity Apprentice" boss-U.S. President Donald Trump. Shortly before sentencing, was held a press-conference at which Warmbir, not hiding tears, asked forgiveness of the North Korean people, calling the attempt to steal the poster "the most bad mistake in life".

But he noted that the State Department is continuing "to have discussions" with North Korea about the release of other three American citizens who are jailed there.

Warmbier was detained at Pyongyang airport while on his way home to the USA in January 2016.

United Nations sanctions limit North Korea's diplomats overseas - at the country's Berlin embassy, for example - to only one bank account each. Authorities accused him of attempting to steal a piece of propaganda art from a hotel and later sentenced him to 15 years in prison for "hostile acts against the state". On this trip, he has already been roundly criticized by some for visiting during a time of high tensions between the US and North Korea over its weapons programs and recent missile launches.

Rodman, who endorsed presidential candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 election campaign and appeared twice as a contestant on Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" TV show, said his latest visit was merely created to visit old friends and to "have a good time".

North Korea announced Warmbier's arrest in late January 2016, saying he committed an anti-state crime with "the tacit connivance of the US government and under its manipulation".

"We want the world to know how we and our son have been brutalized and terrorized by the pariah regime in North Korean".

Yes, we were 30, 40 runs short, obviously, but I'm really proud of the guys, the way they came out and tried to defend that. Pakistan will return to Sophia Gardens for a last-four clash with tournament hosts England in Cardiff on Wednesday.

He had been on a stopover tour in North Korea, en route to Hong Kong, where he was going to study.

The detention of Americans, often sentenced to draconian prison sentences for seemingly small offenses in the totalitarian nation, has compounded tensions between Washington and Pyongyang. "Since we also have our citizens detained in the North. we are putting pressure on the North to free them through various channels", he said, vowing "utmost efforts". On the same trip, he suggested that an American missionary was at fault for his own imprisonment in North Korea, remarks for which he later apologized.

And an upcoming cross-border visit by North Korean taekwondo athletes is expected to further fuel optimism.

Richardson said that U.S. officials had only found out about Warmbier's condition a week earlier and that "in no uncertain terms, North Korea must explain the cause of his coma".

In a statement confirming Warmbier's homecoming, his parents said they were told their son had been comatose since March 2016, the month he was convicted.

A North Korean foreign ministry official said Rodman would stay until Saturday.

She said US officials had a hard time getting information about Warmbier from North Korea. A department of state spokeswoman said the former basketball player had nothing to do with Warmbier's release. The North Korean government told his parents that food poisoning was to blame.

The North Koreans later urgently requested another meeting in NY.

Warmbier's parents Fred and Cindy announced his release in a statement to CNN on Tuesday.

Previous detainees have been released after visits from high-profile Americans, including former presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
