Man charged with threats to US Jewish groups pleads guilty

A disgraced former journalist pleaded guilty in a NY federal court on Tuesday to calling in fake bomb threats to at least a dozen Jewish Community Centers as a part of a freaky revenge campaign against an ex-girlfriend. "Thompson's threats not only inflicted emotional distress on his victim, but also harmed Jewish communities around the country", he added. Thompson also made further claims on email and social media, including a fake Twitter account, claiming the woman was behind the bomb threats.

Juan Thompson, 32, also pleaded guilty on Tuesday in a U.S. District Court in Manhattan to a charge of conveying false information and hoaxes, The Associated Press reported.

Juan Thompson, 31, of St. Louis, Missouri, was charged with making threats to numerous Jewish centers across the country as well as to the Anti-Defamation League's headquarters posing as his ex-girlfriend in a plot to "harass and intimidate" her, officials said. "For this, I deeply apologize".

He said he committed the crimes "to disrupt my ex-romantic partner's life and cause her great distress".

The organizations Thompson threatened included a Jewish museum in NY and the Anti-Defamation League, according to a criminal complaint in Manhattan federal court. While the defense is pushing for up to three years, prosecutors calculated his sentencing guideline as between 37 and 46 months.

US Senators Back Legislation Strengthening Russia Sanctions
Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, said last week that the Senate ought to give Trump " more time" before pushing sanctions. It would affect "key sectors of Russia's economy, including mining, metals, shipping and railways".

The 11-page criminal information against Thompson noted that the Anti-Defamation League received an email on February 21, falsely identifying Thompson's former girlfriend as the one "behind the bomb threats against jews".

The email's reference to "Jewish newtown" appeared to be in regards to the December 2012 school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, that resulted in 26 deaths. In January, Thompson, who previously worked for The Intercept, contacted a Manhattan museum devoted to Jewish history to say he'd planted "2 bombs in the History Museum set to go off Sunday".

After his arrest, his former employer, online news site The Intercept, released a statement: "We were horrified to learn this morning that Juan Thompson, a former employee of The Intercept, has been arrested in connection with bomb threats against the ADL and multiple Jewish Community Centers in addition to cyberstalking".

Thompson is scheduled to be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Kevin P. Castel on September 15.
