Hot And Cold Water Are Equally Effective In Removing Bacteria

To all the lazy hand washers, lathering for five seconds isn't enough to remove bacteria.

"Water works as a physical cleanser and washes the organisms and microbes off the hands", said Dr. Raymond Pontzer, director of infection prevention for UPMC in Pittsburgh, who was not involved in the study.

"People need to feel comfortable when they are washing their hands, but as far as effectiveness, this study shows us that the temperature of the water used didn't matter", said Donald Schaffner, a specialist in food science at the university.

According to research released by Rutgers University, cool water is apparently just as effective as hot water in terms of washing away harmful bacteria.

That's when researchers also found that washing your hands for only 10 seconds (as opposed to the recommended 15 to 20 seconds) also removed a significant amount of bacteria from the hands.

The study also found that people who regularly used lotion on their hands had fewer bacteria after washing than those who didn't, possibly because moisturizing can help fix dry and damaged skin that's more hard to clean.

The song takes about 20 seconds, which is the amount of time people should wash their hands.

Furthermore, antibacterial soap was no better than normal soap, the researchers found.

For the study (n=21), high levels of a harmless bacteria were put on the hands of participants multiple times over a 6-month period before handwashing in 60º F, 79º F, or 100º F water temperatures using 0.5mL, 1mL, or 2mL of soap.

These findings are significant, particularly to the restaurant and food industry, because the US Food and Drug Administration issues guidelines every four years, researchers said.

"The literature on hand washing includes a tremendous amount of misinformation, and data on many issues are missing", they wrote in the new study.

In the UK, NHS experts say people can use cold or hot water to wash their hands.

"It's an interesting piece of information in the overall study of hand washing", he says. Professor Schaffner stated that there should be a change of policy in regards to handwashing policy in the workplace.

"When you want to decontaminate your hands by washing them, the soap chemically detaches the dirt and the organisms, which then come off after you rinse them", she said. A new study suggests you can turn the heat down a notch because cleaning your hands in cold water is just as good. It is important to wash one's hands for at least 10 seconds, though, and make sure lather from the soap that is used gets thoroughly washed off.
