US stocks close at fresh highs

The latest signal that the job market is improving sent stocks higher on Wall Street, putting major indexes on track for more record highs.

The Institute for Supply Management said its barometer of USA factory activity edged up to 54.9 last month from 54.8 in April, while ADP reported private payrolls grew by 253,000 last month, beating analysts' median forecast of a 185,000 increase. Both the S&P and the Nasdaq hit records in early trading, while the Dow was points away from its own.

The S&P 500 rose 1% this week after advancing 0.4% to 2439.07 today, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average advanced 0.6% this week after ticking up 62.11 points, or 0.3%, to 21,206.29 today.

The Nasdaq Composite Index climbed 22 points, or 0.4%, to 6,269. Economists had expected 178,000 jobs in May.

Bond prices rose, sending yields lower. New records in sight?: USA stock markets hit record levels on Thursday and the momentum is set to continue. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 2.15 percent.

In overseas markets, France's CAC-40 gained 0.7 percent, Germany's DAX advanced 0.4 percent and London's FTSE 100 added 0.3 percent.

A separate report showed that the number of workers filing for unemployment claims rose last week, which could be an indication that layoffs are on the rise.

The S&P 500 is up 200.24 points, or 8.9 percent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 5 points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,435. US crude settled up $0.04, or 0.08 percent, at $48.36 per barrel.

Among the day's biggest movers, Lululemon Athletica Inc. jumped almost 17% after it reported first-quarter results that beat expectations. Microsoft jumped 2.4 percent and Apple rose 1.5 percent. The chances of a 25-basis-point increase to the federal funds rate when the FOMC meets in June held at 90%, according to CME Group fed funds futures. On the Nasdaq, 1,620 issues rose and 705 fell.
