The Verizon IndyCar Series put on another nailbiting show Sunday when Will Power won the Rainguard Water Sealers 600 at Texas.

Will Power, of Australia, holds up the trophy in Victory Lane as track president Eddie Gossage, left, points at him after Power won the IndyCar auto race at Texas Motor Speedway, Saturday, June 10, 2017, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Will Power enjoyed a win on the IndyCar circuit at his second home.

Before Saturday night's race, numerous drivers in the IndyCar Series were concerned the newly-repaved track surface at Texas Motor Speedway was going to produce a "single-file race".

Power, whose wife is from Plano, won his second Verizon IndyCar Series race at TMS after leading a race-high 180 laps. Only eight of the 22-car field actually crossed the finish line Saturday night.

Kanaan took a penalty but fought his way to finish second with Simon Pagenaud third.

The final caution came when Sato, driving the same auto in which he won the Indianapolis 500 in two weeks ago and pushing for another win, got his left side slightly into the grass on the front stretch with five laps to go. Indy 500 victor Takuma Sato attempted to pass Scott Dixon, who was running second at the time, on the inside lane and clipped the grass, spinning both drivers and taking them out of the race.

Dixon had been giving Power all he could handle, and Power said he was thinking hard about how he could distance himself from Dixon before Sato took care of that problem for him. I could see (Scott) Dixon was able to pass me at the start/finish line.

Earlier in the session, reigning Indy 500 champion Takuma Sato provisionally moved to the top of the chart at 221.458 miles per hour, pushing defending event victor Graham Rahal to P2.

Graham Rahal and Gabby Chaves drove clean races, barring the lap where Chaves hit and almost spun Rahal on the approach to Turn 3, as the two protagonists survived to take fourth and fifth.

"It was pretty nerve-wracking out there", Pagenaud said.

OUR PREDICTION: The over is 8-1 in the last nine meetings between these two teams and is 5-1 in the last six meetings in NY . On the disabled list since May 6 (retroactive to May 5), the All-Star closer will throw live batting practice on Thursday.

With a full moon looming over the track, the red flag came out after an accident involving eight other cars that was blamed on Kanaan, who recovered from an ensuing 20-second penalty for his runner-up finish.

Hinchcliffe overcame a drive-through penalty - following a pit-lane incident with Helio Castroneves and Sato - that put him down a lap to work his way back up through the field and fight Tony Kanaan for fifth on lap 151.

The crash was triggered when Kanaan was on the inside and Hinchcliffe in the middle with Mikhail Aleshin on the outside.

Hinchcliffe, squeezed tightly between Kanaan and Aleshin, was left with nowhere to go when Kanaan began sliding up the track from inside position.

"It was very much pack racing", said the defending series champion. Hinchcliffe's auto bounced off Mikhail Aleshin's vehicle and that started a chain reaction that collected Tristan Vautier, rookie Ed Jones, Ed Carpenter, JR Hildebrand, Carlos Munoz and Ryan Hunter-Reay. Carlos Munoz and Ryan-Hunter Reay were also knocked out of the race.

Nineteen of the 21 cars that made qualifying attempts bettered Power's previous two-lap record time of 47.7960 seconds on the new track surface at Texas Motor Speedway that was completely repaved in the offseason.

Team owner Dale Coyne, upset at having to replace two more race cars and racking up even more fix bills, was seen on NBCSN marching himself over to Kanaan's vehicle during the red flag to give him a piece of his mind.

Meanwhile initial pole sitter Charlie Kimball's race ended in misery after the first round of pit-stops, with the Chip Ganassi racer suffering a mechanical issue and joining the long list of retirements.

Rossi, the 2016 Indy 500 victor as a rookie, spun and made hard contact with the wall after getting pinched between Dixon and Kanaan, then bouncing of both of the Chip Ganassi Racing cars while coming off the backstretch on lap 37.

Conor Daly was P7 for A.J. Foyt Racing despite spinning while trying to avoid Sato, Chilton and Dixon up ahead, with Chilton officially classified in eighth yet stuck in the pit-lane after sustaining heavy damage to the front of his vehicle. Hinchcliffe got loose coming out of his pit, then swerved into Castroneves at the same time Sato was pulling out of the first stall.

Polesitter Charlie Kimball completed just 41 laps before an oil leak sidelined him and sent the No. 83 machine to the garage. So far his bid is looking good as the 23-year-old Colombian-American driver also took ninth just a couple weeks ago in his season debut at the Indianapolis 500.

Newgarden tried to go three-wide on Lap 201 and slammed the outside wall coming out of Turn 4.
