ISIS claim responsibility for gunfire at popular resort in Philippines

Explosions gunfire reported at Resorts World Manila in Philippines

Marriott hotels released a statement confirming that the incident occurred in parts of the Manila resort complex other than their hotel.

The gunman then ran back to the 5th floor, holed himself up inside room No. 510 and set the room on fire.

MOFA said the victims had been identified, while their relatives would be assisted in flying to the Philippines.

Thirty six people were killed and more than 54 people were left injured after a masked gunman entered a casino at the Resorts World Manila entertainment complex in Philippines on Friday and fired shots and set gaming tables ablaze in what the officials believed was a botched robbery and was not linked to terrorism.

Law enforcement uncovered 37 bodies inside the Resorts World Manila in the Philippines after an attack by a lone gunman in the casino, police said Friday. The gunmen reportedly tried to make off with about $2.6 million in casino chips.

The Islamic State, through its Amaq news agency, claimed responsibility Friday, saying that "Islamic State fighters carried out the Manila attack". "About 100 Christians were killed or wounded".

Authorities suggest that the terrorist group may be claiming responsibility for propaganda purposes, but there could be more to the attack that has yet to come to light.

Meanwhile, the resort's owner, Travellers International Hotel Group, Inc. said in a statement that "we have been informed of several casualties, the number and identities of whom have yet to be determined".

The chaotic incident in the Philippine capital was first feared to be a terrorist attack, perhaps related to ongoing fighting between the army and Islamist militants on the southern island of Mindanao. The Philippines has faced Muslim insurgencies for decades, though much of the violence has occurred in the troubled south, where Marawi is located. He says either the suspect lost in the casino and wanted to get his money back, or went "totally nuts".

All of the people who died suffocated from the smoke, Manila's Metropolitan Police chief said.

Eyewitnesses said they heard two men running into the resort complex with guns, shouting "ISIS" and poured a flammable substance on gaming tables.

The gunman didn't appear to be firing at people, said PNP Chief Dela Rosa. He then barged into the crowded casino with the gasoline and rifle after overcoming efforts by guards to stop him.

He was carrying a rifle and had shot at TV screens, set tables on fire and stuffed a bag with gambling chips.

Hundreds of guests and employees rushed out of the resort hotel after the gunman began shooting on the second floor, hotel employees fleeing the scene told CNN Philippines.

"Most of the victims were women who were found dead inside the bathroom", Apolinario said.

Foreigners were among the 36 people who died at the complex.
