Israel disappointed at Trump's decision not to move U.S. embassy

Today's decision day for moving Israeli Embassy

One Mideast analyst says President Donald Trump's decision not to immediately move the USA embassy in Israel to Jerusalem represents a "very traditional approach to Arab-Israeli peacemaking".

Today, Gilboa says, the average Israeli is more interested in the U.S. finally allowing Israelis to travel to the U.S. visa-free - so they won't have to go through arduous visa questioning at the U.S. Embassy, no matter which Israeli city it's located in.

"In timing such a move he will seek to maximize the chances of successfully negotiating a deal between Israel and the Palestinians", he said.

But the White House suggested the embassy would eventually be relocated.

Trump didn't give details on what his vision for a breakthrough in peace talks might look like, but notably didn't publicly push either side for concessions. But a USA official said no timetable has been set. Abbas, for his part, assured Trump that "we are raising our youth, our children, our grandchildren on a culture of peace".

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state. Israel captured the area from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war and claims all the city as its eternal capital.

Trump had said in a speech a year ago to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee he wanted to move the embassy to "the eternal capital of the Jewish people", and added in a later interview that would happen "fairly quickly". "It would advance it by amending a historic wrong and by shattering the Palestinian fantasy that Jerusalem isn't the capital of Israel", Netanyahu said. The Palestinians argue moving the embassy would prejudge one of the most sensitive issues in the conflict, undermining America's status as an effective mediator. "I am disappointed, but I take the President at his word that this is only a delay in delivering on his promise".

The 1995 Jerusalem Embassy Act stated that the US recognized Jerusalem as the Israeli capital, requiring the USA embassy to move there from Tel Aviv.

The pro-Western kingdom had warned that such a move was a "red line" that it would bolster extremists if crossed.

The praise from Palestinian and Arab leaders and the protest from Israelis showed just how far Trump has shifted from the unwavering support for Israel's policies that he expressed during the 2016 campaign.

The official added that this decision was made to "keep the peace process going".

A 1995 law mandates the relocation of the embassy, but provides the president with the prerogative to postpone the move on national security grounds.

And J Street, a "pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans" lobbying group, hailed Trump for having heeded "the advice of veteran officials in the diplomatic and security communities" in holding off on the embassy move.
