Local Cuban exile community reacts to proposed Trump Cuba policy

It will offer a path forward for the easing of restrictions and sanctions if Cuban ruler Raúl Castro makes democratic and human rights reforms.

On December 17, 2014, Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro made a surprise simultaneous announcement after months of secret talks to swap prisoners and open a dialogue between the long time Cold War foes.

But Havana says it won't bow to USA pressure.

Trump's changes in Cuba policy include prohibiting "financial transactions, including transactions incidental to travel with GAESA and its affiliates, subsidiaries, and successors", according to documents reviewed by CNN.

He said the new US policy will likely lead to additional reductions in air service. The venue is named after a leader of the failed US -backed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba in 1961 against Fidel Castro's revolutionary government. Although Trump lost the Miami area to Hillary Clinton by double digits, he credits support from Cuban-Americans with helping him eke out a narrow victory statewide.

From there, two lawmakers - and not the State Department - got in the driver's seat with Trump, sources tell FP. Three cabinet secretaries, the Gov of Florida and Sen Rubio are expected to be with Trump. But he will impose new limits on commercial transactions that involve the Cuban military.

President Donald Trump is clamping down on some commerce and travel between the United States and Cuba but leaving intact many new avenues President Barack Obama had opened. Trump has ordered his administration to draft the new regulations within the next 30 days, but there was no timeline set for their implementation. The second biggest foreign tourist group is from Germany.

"I do believe that end is in the very near future", he said. He's also a co-sponsor of legislation that would eliminate restrictions on travel to Cuba by American citizens and legal residents.

Advocates for the Obama policies could not dissuade the president, and some criticized Rubio and Diaz-Balart for horse-trading using unrelated issues of importance to the president, such as the House-passed health care bill and ongoing congressional investigations examining White House actions tied to Russia's interference with the election. "But it will add a lot of uncertainty to an already uncertain environment".

"OFAC will implement the Treasury-specific changes via amendments to its Cuban Assets Control Regulations..."

The country's conversation on Cuba is now in pendulum mode: swinging from former President Obama's desire to normalize relations with the island to President Trump's desire to put business and travel restrictions back in place. Marco Rubio - who were experts on Cuba policy.

The policy risks harming independent business people by restoring a requirement for most American travellers to visit Cuba as part of tightly regulated tour groups. But even senior administration officials admitted in a briefing with reporters Thursday that "You can't put the genie back into the bottle", referring to some Obama-era policies that have become popular.
