May's top aides resign after UK election fiasco

If she is to succeed in delivering the wishes of 52% of the public and take Britain out of the European Union, she must find a way to secure the full support of her party to pass legislation preparing for and enacting the departure.

Number 10 said the arrangement will be put to the Cabinet for discussion on Monday.

"We welcome this [DUP] commitment, which can provide the stability and certainty the whole country requires as we embark on Brexit and beyond", a Downing Street spokesman said.

Two of the Prime Minister's advisers, Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill later quit.

Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson, who is engaged to an Irish woman, signalled her opposition by tweeting a link to a same-sex marriage lecture she gave a year ago.

The announcement followed a meeting between May's Chief Whip Gavin Williamson and DUP members in Belfast.

May's office had no immediate comment on the PA report. However, her government may lack the support for such an endeavour during negotiations.

Timothy said he had resigned on Friday after the result was confirmed, and took responsibility for the Conservative manifesto, including a botched plan for elderly social care that caused a major backlash.

"The reason for the disappointing result was not the absence of support for Theresa May and the Conservatives but an unexpected surge in support for Labour", Timothy said in an article published on the ConservativeHome blog.

Ex-minister Lord Barker said there was little appetite for a contest but told BBC's Newsnight: "There's clearly not going to be another election with Theresa May at the head".

James is not Jordan and Durant is the difference
But the Durant-led Warriors are not the 2016 Warriors, which seems to shorten the window on James delivering more championships. He has been in this league for a long time and he's, I think, at the top of his game at the biggest time".

Some say her failure means the government must now take a more flexible approach to the divorce.

Senior Tories have also expressed concern over the prospect of closer links with the DUP - with one MP, Sarah Wollaston, tweeting: "I will always oppose the death penalty & would resign if others imposed it".

In her statement Ms Hill said: "I have no doubt at all that Theresa May will continue to serve and work hard as Prime Minister and do it brilliantly".

Newspaper headlines saw her as just clinging on.

Speaking after visiting Buckingham Palace, she said only her party had the "legitimacy" to govern, despite falling eight seats short of a majority. She's then got to present a programme to Parliament.

The new statement came after Downing Street earlier said the DUP had agreed to the principles of an outline agreement to support a Conservative government.

'One of them is country, one of the others is LGBTI rights and I asked for a categoric assurance that if any deal was done with the DUP there would be absolutely no rescinding of LGBTI rights in the rest of the United Kingdom and that we would try to use any influence that we had to advance LGBTI rights in Northern Ireland, ' she said.

Defending her party's stance on gay marriage in a recent interview, leader Arlene Foster insisted those who characterised the DUP as anti-gay were wide of the mark.

Ahead of the announcement, a former DUP member of the Northern Ireland Assembly said he does not expect a deal to last more than 12 or 18 months.

"I could not care less what people get up to in terms of their sexuality, that's not a matter for me, when it becomes a matter for me is when people try to redefine marriage".
