News reports that London Bridge has been closed as armed police gather.

One reveller is believed to have been stabbed five times, while there are unconfirmed reports that another was shot in the head. According to the Associated Press, a van struck multiple people on the bridge in a hit-and-run incident and "witnesses also reported seeing people being stabbed by at least one man".

"A van came from London Bridge itself, went between the traffic light system and rammed it towards the steps".

First reports of the incident emerged shortly after 10.10pm local time (7.10am AEST).

A third incident is taking place at Vauxhall, Scotland Yard said.

"And then we ran into the restaurant into the kitchen, where there was a bunch of other people and a guy had been stabbed and he was cut and he was bleeding quite a lot".

One woman who spoke to the Daily Mail said she had seen at least three people with injuries to their throat.

Transport for London also tweeted that the bridge was closed in both directions due to a "major incident".

High Commissioner Janice Charette says people should stay away from London Bridge and nearby Borough Market until the areas are deemed safe.

She will chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee on Sunday, No 10 said.

She said police were firing weapons.

Armed officers responded to the reports of the stabbings and confirmed "shots have been fired", Metropolitan Police said.

Medics treated people lying injured on the ground near the market as shocked people cried and shouted around them.

In the wake of the Manchester attack, the United Kingdom government increased the terror alert to critical, the highest level, and deployed the army to support police. Police remained on the scene treating injured people and carrying them away at the end Thrale Street, some with slash wounds to the neck.

England has been on edge since May 22, when a suicide bomber killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert at the Manchester Arena.
