Nest wants your home security camera to recognize you

Nest unveils new camera that detects family members, intruders

After identifying a new face, the camera will send you a Person Alert, and you can then save a familiar face within the app. Two years in development, it'll be the basis of a new, more intelligent take on home security. The best thing about this camera is the facial recognition feature that uses Google FaceNet technology. It has a 4K image sensor, but it does not actually stream in 4K.

Having a crisp image even when zoomed in gives the Cam IQ the ability to leverage all Google's machine learning prowess to identify who and what is wandering through the frame. The demonstration we saw was impressive, with an intruder's face extremely clear and easy to make out when zoomed into. Rather than alerting the intruder by moving the camera, the device remains motionless but uses digital zooming to follow them within a 130-degree angle. On that note, you can only communicate walkie-talkie style at launch, but new software that'll make the camera function like a persistent speakerphone will be released a few weeks later.

You'll be able to see what's going on in your house remotely through the app.

Instead of just showing you what's happening, Nest Cam IQ is smart enough to differentiate between a person and your cat and can alert you accordingly - with no subscription required.

The camera can track people as they walk around the room.

Hence you can listen in on your sleeping baby, tell your partner you're on your way home, and ask burglars if they wouldn't mind awfully putting that PlayStation down and leaving the area.

The device is powered by a USB-C cord and includes all flavors of Wi-Fi including 802.11ac.

That set off pushing and shoving among lawmakers on the floor. "This demonstrates the sentiment of the Republican party", Democratic Rep.

The Nest Cam IQ also features facial recognition capabilities, which means it can distinguish between known family members or friends and strangers and notify the owner accordingly. Person alerts is only available on previous Nest Cam models with a Nest Aware subscription.

You also get access to the likes of a 10- or 30-day, browsable video history and "Activity Zones" with 'automatic door detection for even more precise notifications'.

This will be Nest's first device to draw upon the same human-like skills that Google has been programming into its computers. This is something we've seen already with the Netatmo Welcome.

Yes, we know you can recognise people, but for a smart camera, this is a big deal. Those in the UK, France, Netherlands, Belgium and Ireland can preorder today for €349 European Union, and Nest says preorders will start in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Spain from June 13th. But what really sets this new security camera apart is smarts. This option can now recognise people speaking, and dogs barking and warn you of either. Nest says the speaker is "7x more powerful than the original Nest Cam". It has a tripod mount in the base so that you can wall mount with a standard adaptor (not supplied). Pricing will be £299.

Naturally, the Nest Cam IQ's huge head is stuffed full of high-tech smart surveillance tech. We'll have to wait until we get our review sample to see if the Cam IQ's premium is worth it.

Will you cough up for a Nest Cam IQ, or are there more affordable alternatives?
