Rush-hour bombing near embassies kills 80, wounds hundreds in Kabul

US President Donald Trump spoke with his Afghan counterpart Ashraf Ghani and condemned the terror attack in Kabul, describing it as "barbaric".

The Wednesday morning explosion - one of the deadliest in the 16-year Afghanistan war - came at the start of the holy month of Ramadan, shattering windows and blowing doors off their hinges in houses hundreds of metres away. The explosion occurred near the German embassy at one of the entrances to Kabul's unofficial Green Zone.

The Taliban denied responsibility and said it condemned attacks that have no legitimate target and killed civilians.

The explosives were hidden in a tanker truck used to clean out septic systems, Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the interior minister, said.

In neighboring Pakistan, President Mamnoon Hussain said Pakistanis were saddened by Wednesday's attack.

The blast was the latest in a series of attacks in the Afghan capital. Refugee rights group Pro Asyl demanded that such deportations be scrapped for good, arguing that Afghans must not be sent back to "a country that can not protect civilians".

No specific group has officially claimed responsibility for the massacre.
