Reports say Mueller probe now examining possible obstruction

President Donald Trump says the economy is improving and job numbers are up, despite the "phony Witch Hunt" against him.

Trump is being investigated for alleged obstruction of justice, according to officials who spoke to the Washington Post What is Mueller investigating?

It wasn't immediately clear to whom Trump was referring, though the man who wrote a memo recommending Comey's firing, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, was also the official who approved the appointment of a special counsel to look into Russian election meddling.

Sessions' testimony came in the wake of fired FBI Director Comey's assertion that he believed he was sacked by Trump as part of an effort to influence the agencies' investigation into Russia's meddling in the presidential polls.

The Post reported Wednesday evening that Mueller has widened his investigation to include whether Trump obstructed justice, citing five people briefed on the requests and noting that the investigation began after Comey was sacked last month.

The Post said investigators had requested interviews with CIA Director Dan Coats, National Security Agency chief Michael Rogers and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director.

The Post cited anonymous sources who were briefed on requests made by investigators.

Following the Washington Post report Wednesday, Trump's legal team denounced the media leak, calling it "outrageous, inexcusable and illegal", according to Reuters.

The Huffington Post noted in March there were similar comments during last year's campaign from prominent members of Team Trump, including Sean Spicer, Kellyanne Conway, and Reince Priebus.

The newspaper reported that the FBI started the alleged obstruction investigation within days of Comey being fired.

It is today been described as a "crime scene" following revelations the probe into Russia's interference in the USA election has been widened to include allegations President Donald Trump attempted to obstruct justice.

An hour later, the president tweeted: "You are witnessing the single greatest WITCH HUNT in American political history - led by some very bad and conflicted people!" When asked about a letter he wrote recommending firing Comey, Rosenstein said that Mueller could be looking into the decision-making process for the firing - and he was therefore "not at liberty to talk about that now".

President Donald Trump speaks in the Roosevelt Room of the White House in Washington, Thursday, June 15, 2017, during an event on Apprenticeship and Workforce of Tomorrow initiatives.

"Regardless of recommendation, I was going to fire Mr Comey knowing there was no good time to do it", Mr Trump told Lester Holt of NBC News in an interview broadcast May 11.

The memo sent Thursday asks for records related to foreign travel, contacts with Russian "officials, agents or nationals" and background investigations into the top Trump associates now targeted by Mueller's probe.

Now, Mr Trump has suggested that he is indeed being investigated.

Trump punched back a day later, telling reporters Comey had lied under oath, saying: "Frankly, James Comey confirmed a lot of what I said, and some of the things that he said just weren't true". Days after the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief was ousted, Trump told NBC News' Lester Holt that the Russian Federation probe played a role in his explosive decision to dismiss him.

The probe into obstruction began before Mueller was appointed.

Rosenstein's statement clearly didn't go far enough, as Trump took to Twitter Friday morning and bashed the top Justice Department official.
