Secret Service reportedly has no Trump tapes

If there are tapes can the White House be forced to turn them over

The Secret Service said Monday it has no record of any audio recordings made in the White House since President Donald Trump's inauguration.

The Secret Service handled recording systems within the White House for past presidents, including presidents Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy.

"I'll tell you about that maybe sometime in the very near future", Trump said Friday of the possibility of having tapes.

Trump should have given a straight answer when asked whether he has tapes of his communications with Comey during last week's news conference, Republican Senator Susan Collins of ME told CNN on Monday.

In May, Trump tweeted Comey "better hope there are no tapes" of their conversations.

Trump said at a news conference Friday that he would reveal if he taped the conversations "over a very short period of time".

The Journal noted that past presidents have had the Secret Service manage White House recordings.

But some, have questioned whether Trump is just bluffing about the tapes.

Verdict reached Minnesota officer's trial
From that moment, the case hinged largely on conflicting accounts of what Castile was doing before he was shot. Prosecutors said Yanez was not justified in firing his gun, saying Castile was courteous and non-threatening.

Trump generated curiosity about recordings last month on Twitter.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, had responded Wednesday evening to the Post report by saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

So Trump's tape threat could be a bluff created to get potential witnesses like Comey to question their own recollection of events, fearing that an indisputable tape would come forward and prove them wrong.

The records, had they existed, may not have been publicly released immediately anyways, as they fall under the Presidential Records Act, which are not necessarily subject to FOIA, especially while the president is still in office.

Grassley said Comey's dismissal and Comey's testimony on Lynch should be looked at together, noting that Comey "took the opportunity in his testimony to clear his own name by denouncing as false the administration's claims that the FBI rank-and-file had lost confidence in Mr. Comey's leadership in the wake of the Clinton email investigation".

The House Intelligence Committee has requested the White House turn over any tapes that might exist. It took place a few hours after Comey's testimony ended, and could have been part of the full day planned by Trump aides to keep him off of Twitter while the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director testified. The paper said it made the request on May 15.

If you aren't a fan of Trump, your perception of time is probably even worse than that of people who like the president.
