Senate GOP health bill would reshape Obama law

"Make no mistake: the Senate bill is just as devastating as the widely unpopular House-passed bill and sends us back to a time when health care was out of reach for many in our state", said Heather O'Loughlin, co-director of the nonprofit Montana Budget and Policy Center on Thursday after the text of the bill, called the American Health Care Act, was released. The low number will attract news attention, he predicted, until an amendment to the bill is offered next week restores the $45 billion over ten years from the House version of the bill.

The Senate bill proposes phasing out the Medicaid expansion provided by Obamacare beginning in 2020 in addition to limiting how much money each state receives for Medicaid.

Both bills would eliminate most of the taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act.

It would largely retain the subsidies Obama provided to help millions buy insurance, which are pegged mostly to people's incomes and the premiums they pay. Medicaid, along with federal children's health programs, now covers roughly 3 out of every 10 people addicted to opioid painkillers or heroin nationwide, numbers that expanded after the passage of Obamacare in 2010. Previous estimates from the state Department of Health and Human Services show Montana would need an extra $251 million a year to maintain present coverage under reduced federal funding.

"Currently, for a variety of reasons, we are not ready to vote for this bill", the senators said, noting that they are "open to negotiation" before the bill goes to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

Additionally, Cannon said he sees no value in subsidizing health plans that remain unaffordable for low-income plan members. "That should be the central issue for Republicans - repealing Obamacare and making healthcare more affordable". "Montanans deserve a voice in this process".

It's no surprise that Obama came out against the bill, which would eviscerate his signature health care legislation. The town hall starts at 6:30 p.m.

"If the bill is good for Nevada, I'll vote for it and if it's not, I won't", said Heller, whose state added 200,000 additional people under Obama's law.

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky. Daines has faced criticism for not holding an in-person town hall this year.

After Herrera's introduction, Javier Aquino forced New Zealand keeper Stefan Marinovic into a left-handed save, before Giovani dos Santos fired over.

The bill makes a few exceptions for this rule, as elderly people, pregnant women, and children can not be denied access to Medicaid if they are unemployed.

"The bill before us was drafted in secret and behind closed doors, and I'm very concerned that the Senate is racing toward a vote without the necessary input, analysis, or even a single Senate hearing".

There are a few other ways the Senate bill mirrors the House bill.

Speaking to reporters after the joint statement was released, Sen.

"I look forward to studying this bill and receiving input from Montanans on its impact", Gianforte said. Under Obamacare, employers with 50 or more employees are required to offer their workers health plans whose costs do not exceed a certain percentage of their income.

Many scoffed at the short period of time they will have to read the bill - one week - before voting on it. McConnell said that the Congressional Budget Office scoring of the bill won't be released until next week.

"The current bill does not repeal Obamacare". Let's be clear: Senate Republicans are paying for tax cuts for the wealthy with American lives.

In a move that will please the health-care industry, the Senate bill also proposes repealing all the ACA taxes except for its "Cadillac tax" on high-cost health plans in language similar to the House version. The bill would continue the enhanced Medicaid expansion funding from Obamacare until 2021 and then phase it out over three years.

So why did the Senate bill end up cutting Medicaid even deeper than the House?
