Student Who Missed Graduation Recalls Subway Celebration

Jerich Marco Alcantara, a nursing student at Hunter College in NY, said he was given an impromptu graduation ceremony by fellow riders who stuck with him on the train.

"I figured I'd lighten the mood by thanking everyone for coming out", he told New York Magazine.

Alcantara, graduating from Hunter-Bellevue School of Nursing in Manhattan's Lower East Side, was then given a special graduation ceremony on the train by other riders. After trying to fix the stopped train for an hour and a half, MTA called for a rescue train, adding 30 minutes to his already-enormous delay. A college graduate in Queens whose train was delayed so badly he missed his graduation ceremony.

But as all NY commuters know, merciless train delays are liable to strike at random, for even hours at a time.

Because he missed such an important event, however, his fellow stranded New Yorkers hosted a makeshift graduation ceremony on the crowded subway vehicle.

By the time Alcantara and his family finally made it to the venue the ceremony was long over.

A student by the name of Jerich Marco Alcantara found that out the hard way this week. Then on the rescue train, his friend played a graduation song and the whole subway vehicle got in on the act.

"At first I was upset, before that makeshift ceremony", Alcantara said.

"At first I was anxious we'd be late", Alcantara told CNN.

"It wasn't so much an idea, but something that just happened", Alcantara said.

Fellow subway rider Nadiya Afzal, captured the ceremony with her phone and uploaded it to Facebook on Tuesday afternoon. Now, Alcantara, who studied nursing, will study for his nursing board exams to become a fully fledged registered nurse.
