Tropical development in the Caribbean likely this week

Daily Rain and Storms

A chance for showers and thunderstorms will accompany the moisture every day this week, with the greatest chances Wednesday and Thursday as a tropical system may affect the area.

The next area of disturbed weather is just to the east of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The system, named Invest 93L and now near Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, was too disorganized to have an official track or strength forecast as of Monday morning, but at a minimum, significant rainfall is expected in the Florida Panhandle later in the week.

Some strengthening is expected, the hurricane center said, and the system could become Tropical Storm Bret tonight when it is expected to move through the islands.

As the system moves from near the Yucatan Peninsula to the Gulf, heavy rain will continue to threaten western Cuba with flooding rain.

The National Hurricane Center is tracking two separate systems as of Monday morning.

Zabihullah Mujahed, a spokesman for the group, claimed to have killed "scores of security personnel" in this attack. The militant group often exaggerates casualty numbers in attacks against government targets and security forces.

This system is no threat to the USA mainland at this time.

The probability of a tropical depression or storm forming in the next five days was raised to 60 percent.

Forecasters there said two relied-upon computer models - the ECMWF and GFS - keep the system well south of Alabama.

"Before the storm develops, it's pretty hard to determine where the system will move", said Nikki Hathaway, meteorologist for the National Weather Service's Houston-Galveston office.

Barbados is now under a tropical storm warning. While there is less rainfall potential at the moment to the north, we have many swollen rivers in that area due to recent rains which could also increase the local flood threat.

The tropical Atlantic season looks like it will be getting an early start this year, and that has implications for our own weather the rest of this week. Meanwhile, the developing system over the Gulf of Mexico this week will need to be watched more closely over the next four days around Florida and the southeastern U.S. It is now producing 40 miles per hour sustained winds as it moves west at 23 miles per hour.
