The 43-year-old Hughes, who is from Hillsboro, Illinois, was airlifted to St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes suffered apparent head trauma after a truck he was in was hit by a train Friday, ESPN reported. His condition was not immediately available, but Illinois State Police described his injuries as serious. The vehicle was struck on the passenger side.

Hughes was traveling eastbound on the trail when he approached a rail crossing marked with crossbucks.

Qatar foreign minister denounces 'unfair,' 'illegal' sanctions
Qatar's food producers are turning to new importers to fill a gap left by an ongoing diplomatic dispute with its neighbors. Analysts estimate that a political standoff between Qatar and other Arab states will cost the airline heavily.

Hughes dominated the UFC welterweight division for the better part of a decade when he exploded into the octagon by winning the belt with his now-historic KO win over Carlos Newton in 2001.

The UFC sent their prayers to Hughes and his family via their official Twitter account.

Hughes registered a further 17 victories in the promotion, including wins over fellow Hall of Famer B.J. and future inductee Georges St-Pierre. We'll update the story as it develops.
