Upset! Kerber 1st French Open top seed to lose in 1st round

French Open 2017: Petra Kvitova wins on return after knife attack horror

This was the first time a women's No. 1 seed lost in the first round of the French Open and Kerber joins Stephan Edberg, who did it on the men's side in 1990.

Victory was a bonus for Petra Kvitova as the Czech left-hander made an emotional return to the limelight at the French Open on Sunday, breezing into the second round in her first competitive match since a burglar stuck a knife through her playing hand.

Kerber, who replaced Williams atop the WTA rankings this month, was gone from Roland Garros by lunchtime on Day 1, putting up little resistance while being beaten 6-2, 6-2 by 40th-ranked Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation.

Serena cheered on Venus from the players' box on Court Philippe Chatrier, and there was plenty for the Williams family to celebrate as the 10th seed eased to a 6-3 6-1 win over Kurumi Nara.

However, the 15th seed won the opening point of the match with a sweeping cross-court forehand to set the tone for a convincing victory in just 74 minutes over world number 86 Boserup.

Venus Williams, a straight-sets victor Sunday, made her 20th appearance at the French Open, the most by any woman in the Open era.

Kvitova raced into a 3-0 lead and had three break points in the fourth game before Boserup finally got on the scoreboard. "This match is special to me", said Kvitova at the post-game press conference. But that was about it.

Makarova dictated play for the bulk of the match and overcame an apparent bout of nerves late on, which saw her twice drop serve with the winning line in sight only to immediately restore her two-break advantage.

"It was really tough".

Along with Makarova, her fellow countrywoman Svetlana Kuznetsova also wins her opening round match. Kvitova also provided a reassuring assessment of the conditon of her hand, saying she hadn't experienced any pain while on court. I'm glad with how I played today. That setback came just a year after Ruzici won the French Open.

Five months after suffering career-threatening injuries when she was stabbed by an intruder in her home, Kvitova looked sharp and eager in a 6-3 6-2 triumph over Julia Boserup.

Makarova is now ranked 40th in the world, but she has been as high as No. 8 in the past and she reached the semifinals of the U.S. Open in 2014 and the Australian Open in 2015.

"It's a pleasure to be here. Normally I can move very well, but on clay it's always a little bit different and hard for me", she added. The 29-year-old Kerber lacked the pace and power to trouble her fellow left-hander.The point of the day at the French Open came from Dominic Thiem, one of the brightest talents in the game."I think it doesn't really matter how I played", but I won, Kvitova said.

During her on-court interview, Kvitova addressed her coach, her family and others in her guest box, saying: "Thank you for everything you helped me through (in) this hard time".

If her serve could have been better, there were plenty of good moments, and in many ways it was a classic Kvitova match with unforced errors punctuated by some stunning winners, a reminder of the shot-making that has lifted her to two Grand Slam titles.

On Sunday, several members of Kvitova's entourage wore black T-shirts with white capital letters on the front that read, "Courage".
