US shoots down Syrian Air Force fighter

At least 117 killed in US-backed Syrian offensive to expel Islamic State

At least 117 killed in US-backed Syrian offensive to expel Islamic State

The incident comes nearly two weeks after a USA jet downed a pro-Syrian government drone that threatened US -led coalition forces in southern Syria.

A Syrian warplane was shot down near Raqqa by the United States-led coalition after the regime wounded Syrian Democratic Force fighters in an earlier attack, the US-led coalition said.

US Central Command said in a statement that the plane was shot down "in collective self-defence of Coalition-partnered forces".

The Syrian army said earlier that the USA -led coalition shot down one of its planes during a combat mission against Islamic State militants.

Coalition aircraft conducted a show of force and stopped the initial pro-regime advance toward the town, the Pentagon said.

From that moment, the case hinged largely on conflicting accounts of what Castile was doing before he was shot. Prosecutors said Yanez was not justified in firing his gun, saying Castile was courteous and non-threatening.

According to a statement from the Pentagon, pro-Syrian regime forces attacked the US -backed Syrian Democratic Forces-held town of Ja'Din, south of Tabqah in northern Syria, wounding a number of SDF fighters and driving the SDF from the town.

"Following the Pro-Syrian forces attack, the Coalition contacted its Russian counterparts by telephone via an established "de-confliction line" to de-escalate the situation and stop the firing".

The U.S. military issued a statement saying the action was justified in light of a previous incident when Syrian warplanes dropped bombs in the vicinity of US-backed fighters and injured a number of troops.

The U.S. -led coalition called on all parties in Syria's conflict to "focus their efforts on the defeat of ISIS, which is our common enemy and the greatest threat to regional and worldwide peace and security".
