It was back in April when director Patty Jenkins was giving an interview with Entertainment Weekly and she was already thinking about the storyline for a second Wonder Woman film. From perfectly chiding "its male mudslingers with humor and grace" in the script to offering a women-only screening of the film in spite of male critics, "Wonder Woman" stands as an emblem of female empowerment.

Compared with other super hero movies, "Wonder Woman" is expecting a larger domestic opening than "Iron Man" ($98.6 million); "Doctor Strange" ($85 million); "Thor" ($65.7 million); but less than "Deadpool" ($132 million) and "Man of Steel" ($116.6 million).

Director Patty Jenkins now holds the record among female filmmakers for the most lucrative opening weekend ever.

The Wonder Woman breakthrough comes six months ahead of the release of DC's Justice League, a superhero ensemble that will bring together Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman. Warners and DC's Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) is No. 5 on the list with a domestic debut of $166 million.

Yesterday the White House comms director, Mike Dubke quit , a decision which makes more sense by the hour. His answer was met with laughter from the press corps.

But "Wonder Woman" had something those movies didn't - critical support (it now has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes). "While the story was critically tough, she emerged as a real bright spot", Goldstein said.

So there were a number of factors behind the unquestionable and much-deserved success of Wonder Woman. Despite leading the domestic box office last weekend, "Dead Men Tell No Tales" was only able to grab about $22 million this time around. Disney and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" continues to stay in the top five, this weekend in the fourth slot.

The movie made $100.05 million in the United States and roughly the same amount overseas this weekend, according to Variety.

Following Memorial Day weekend's sluggish performance, the summer box office trailed last year's by almost 9%. This is the first DC movie of its current, shared-universe slate to get an overwhelming nod. This could be crucial to the film's overall performance at the box office.
