Jeff Bezos Becomes World's Richest Person

The boss of Amazon and owner of the Washington Post, is the seventh person to be crowned the world's richest person since Forbes began tracking the wealthy in 1987.

The shares touched a record high of $1,083.31 U.S. in regular trading, helping chief executive Jeff Bezos briefly unseat fellow tech billionaire Bill Gates to become the world's richest person, according to Forbes.

His world's-richest-man milestone was made possible because of Amazon surging stock price.

Bezos achieved the feat after a 1 percent pop in the shares of Amazon.com, which accounts for the vast majority of Bezos' wealth.

Jeff Bezos, the founder, chairman, and CEO of Netflix, now has a net worth of $90.2 billion.

Wenger has so far been adamant that Sanchez will not be sold, though as yet the Chilean has not directly asked to leave the club. The Chilean has been in a stand-off with Arsene Wenger's side for months and has now entered the final 12 months of his deal.

Amazon's share price increased by $15 overnight, while Microsoft's dropped slightly. His net worth touched $4.4 billion in 2007 and further grew to $18.4 billion by 2012, ranking him 26th on the list.

Bezos owned slightly more than 80 million shares, or around 17 percent, of Amazon as of February 17, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Meanwhile, Microsoft's stock is little changed the past two sessions. Bezos issued a request for philanthropic ideas in a tweet in June, just before Amazon announced a $13.7 billion deal for organic grocer Whole Foods. After the close, Amazon is scheduled to report second-quarter results.

Investments, depreciation of equipment, share buys and other expenses ate into revenue in a familiar pattern of Amazon putting long-term growth ahead of short-term profit.
