Baby Charlie Gard's doctors receive death threats

Staff at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have received death threats in relation to the Charlie Gard case

Staff at the Great Ormond Street Hospital in London have received death threats in relation to the Charlie Gard case

Mary MacLeaod, chair of Great Ormond Street Hospital, said thousands of abusive messages had been sent to doctors and nurses in recent weeks relating to the case.

On Saturday, GOSH said in a statement that it had contacted police following death threats and a "shocking and disgraceful tide" of hostility and disturbance at the London medical facility.

The 11-month-old boy, who suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage, is now the subject of an intense legal battle between his parents and medics over his treatment.

Parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard took their case to the European Court of Human Rights but judges refused to intervene.

Great Ormond Street Hospital lawyer Katie Gollop broke the bad news to Charlie's parents at a pre-court hearing Friday in London.

So far, the courts have sided with Charlie's doctors, who say the treatment is a fruitless endeavor that has not been tested on someone with Charlie's specific condition and that it will only cause the baby more pain.

Next week, Charlie's parents will present evidence at London's High Court, provided it is new and relevant to the case, according to the AP.

Families have been harassed and discomforted while visiting their children, and we have received complaints of unacceptable behavior even within the hospital itself.

Congress holds joint session on martial law extension
He added, " Extending martial law can undermine civilian authorities and the existing democratic process in the country ". The militants are reportedly holding about 300 civilian hostages in Marawi.

The pre-hearing Friday was the latest step in his parents' long legal battle to give Charlie, who suffers from mitochondrial depletion syndrome and can not breathe unaided, an experimental treatment.

Charlie Gard's parents have said they are "extremely upset" by the backlash they received after GOSH revealed the abuse its staff was suffering.

But Charlie's parents have garnered support from President Trump, Pope Francis and USA lawmakers.

Doctors at GOSH have said there is no realistic prospect of improvement and Charlie should be allowed to die with dignity. "We fully understand that there is intense public interest, and that emotions run high", she added. "Staff have received abuse both in the street and online".

"We recognise the tireless advocacy of Charlie's loving parents and the natural sympathy people feel with his situation".

According to the association, Gollop told the judge Friday that doctors had produced a report on the newest scan and said, "it makes for sad reading".

The court is due to hold a hearing on Monday to consider the latest medical evidence.

Dr. Michio Hirano, the medical director of the Laboratory of Metabolic and Mitochondrial Disease in NY who flew to the United Kingdom to assess Charlie, argued last week that his experimental drugs still had a chance of helping the boy.
