"The Quartet envoys reiterate that violence deepens mistrust and is fundamentally incompatible with achieving a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict", said the statement.

Israeli Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan said he would continue to support the metal detectors remaining in place unless police provide a satisfactory alternative.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said one Palestinian was killed during a separate clash outside the city, taking the death toll from the past two days to seven.

Israel fortified its troops in the West Bank and placed forces on high alert after the attack.

Tensions between Israel and Palestinians have been rising since July 14 when the Israel installed checkpoints and metal detectors at the entrances of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound after three Israeli Arab gunmen shot dead two Israeli policemen near the site.

Israel army commanders said they were readying for more attacks from lone-wolf assailants and more mass demonstrations.

"If we are patient we will surely get what we want and halt these electronic doors and stop these measures and stop the raids of the Israeli government in all the cities of the West Bank".

Hours earlier the 19-year-old posted on Facebook, calling for resistance against events unfolding at Jerusalem's Al Aqsa Mosque compound.

German minister compares Turkey to former East Germany, to review weapons sale
He accused Erdogan of trying to muzzle "every critical voice" with mass arrests in sweeping crackdowns over the past year. Germany has also frozen existing arms export projects between the two countries as a preliminary measure.

Aboul Gheit also called on the global community, primarily the United States, to shoulder their responsibilities and compel the Israeli government to maintain the status quo of Jerusalem.

"We need different security measures and means for checking (those entering) there", he told Israel TV's Channel 2.

Israeli officials argue that the detectors are needed for security after the gun attack outside the mosque.

It remains unclear if the metal detectors will be removed.

Clashes erupted late Saturday in the Old City of Jerusalem, where hundreds of Muslim men defiantly held evening prayers outside after being denied entrance to the holy site Muslims call Noble Sanctuary and Jews call Temple Mount.

In an address to PA officials at their headquarters in Ramallah, Abbas said, "I, on behalf of the Palestinian leadership, announce... a freeze of all contacts with the occupation state on all levels until Israel commits to canceling all the measures against our Palestinian people in general and Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque in particular".

Israeli soldiers and police fanned out across East Jerusalem and the West Bank on Saturday, carrying out raids and arrests a day after three Palestinians were killed in violent protests and after three Israeli settlers were knifed to death in their kitchen during a birthday celebration.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called the new security measures an insult to the Muslim world as Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit accused Israel of "playing with fire".
