Trump confirms covert Central Intelligence Agency programme in Syria on Twitter

US takes stricter line on Assad

In a tweet posted Monday evening, Trump addressed a Washington Post article published last Wednesday, claiming the president was set to end a covert program training and arming USA -backed Syrian rebels against dictator Bashar al-Assad. "I'm no fan of Assad. I certainly think that what he's done to that country and to humanity is awful", Trump said. I have been saying that for a long time.

Recalling that he had ordered cruise missile strikes on Assad for using chemical weapons, Trump said: "I am not somebody that will stand by and let him get away with what he tried to do".

Trump said former President Barack Obama should have taken action against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his allies Iran and Hizbullah after he drew a "red line in the sand" against Assad's alleged use of chemical weapons early in the six-year civil war.

U.S. Special Operations Commander Tony Thomas also appeared to confirm the end of the Central Intelligence Agency program on Friday, but he swiftly walked back his comments, claiming they were based on "public reporting".

"Our approach supporting the humanitarian needs of displaced Syrian citizens as close to their home country as possible is the best way to help most people", said Trump. "That was a bad day for this country", Trump said. US Donald Trump says what Mr Assad has done to his country and to humanity is awful.

"One of the things that we have made tremendous strides at is getting rid of ISIS. This idea that we could provide some light arms or even more sophisticated arms to what was essentially an opposition made up of former doctors, farmers, pharmacists and so forth, and that they were going to be able to battle not only a well-armed state but also a well-armed state backed by Russian Federation, backed by Iran, a battle-hardened Hezbollah, that was never in the cards". "Our military is an incredible fighting force".

You know how sometimes you're tapping out a tweet or a Facebook post or an email and you hit "send" a second too soon and you're like, "shit, I shouldn't have said that?"

"I'll be making my position very clear over the next 24 hours".
