"The new technology and warfighting capabilities that Ford brings will transform naval warfare, making us a more lethal Navy", Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said in a Navy release. During World War II, Ford attained the rank of lieutenant commander in the Navy, serving on the light carrier USS Monterey (CVL 26).

Adm. John Richardson, chief of naval operations, said the carrier is equipped with new technologies and warfighting systems created to help transform naval warfare. His daughter, Susan Ford Bales, christened the vessel in 2013.

The ship that bears Ford's name has adopted those words for its official crest.

According to Fox News report, "The USS Gerald R. Ford is $13 billion futuristic ship complete with a very big flight deck and a new electromagnetic system to launch aircraft".

The Navy will spend $43 billion developing and building the three Ford-class carriers that Congress has authorized thus far.

The ship and class is named for the nation's 38th president, Gerald Ford, who came to office under remarkable circumstances following the resignation of Richard Nixon in 1974.

Referring to President Teddy Roosevelt, acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley told Mr. Trump, "One of your predecessors famously said 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.' We offer you, sir, a big stick". The ship only requires a crew of 2,600 to operate, 600 less than the Nimitz.

The President of the United States officially pulled the boat into the water. The Ford has a massive new flight deck with a new electromagnetic aircraft launch system, which will give it the ability to launch aircraft faster.

The Navy has operated 10 carriers since the retirement of the USS Enterprise in 2012 - one fewer than the 11 carrier-force mandated by Congress in 2011.

The warship also has a smaller island that sits farther back on the ship to make it easier and quicker to refuel, re-arm and relaunch planes, and a nuclear power plant created to allow cruising speeds of more than 30 knots and operation for 20 years without refueling. NCC-1701, meanwhile, is expected to launch sometime around 2245.
