USB 3.2 spec announced will give you 2Gbps transfers over certified USB-C cables By John Hoff

The USB 3.0 Promoter Group has announced that the USB 3.2 specification will be released shortly.

While USB hosts and devices were originally designed as single-lane solutions, USB Type-C™ cables were created to support multi-lane operation to ensure a path for scalable performance. That being said, it is a bit surprising to see that USB 3.2 is limited to using only two of the four SuperSpeed USB lanes available in the USB Type-C connector, and we may still see further improvements in the future to enable the usage of the remaining lanes.

This is all possible because USB-C ports and cable were initially created to support multi-lane operations, which will allow for up to two lanes of 5 Gbps (USB 3.0 and first-gen USB 3.1 speeds) or two lanes of 10 Gbps operation (second-gen USB 3.1 speeds).

Type-C is a reversible cable that is meant to charge all of your gadgets and even serve as a new audio jack, video output or charger. There was much more margin for error prior to USB Type-C. USB 3.2 brings support for multi-lane USB operation, in order to provide USB data transfer speeds of up to 20 Gbps (2.5 GB/s) over a USB Type-C cable.

USB-C can carry data across numerous connections such as Apple's Thunderbolt, Displayport, HDMI, and, of course, USB 3.1 - which is now the official data transfer standard for USB-C. The update takes advantage of capabilities already built into many devices, meaning you might not need any new cables to get the higher speeds. A Type-C cable certified for SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps would be able to deliver a transfer speed of 2GB per second (around 16Gbps) when data exchange occurs between a USB 3.2 host and USB 3.2 storage device. The Group will release the final USB 3.2 specification at the USB Developer Days 2017 event in September this year. But now, using the wrong hardware can prevent a cable from reaching the specified data rates, or transferring the correct amount of power.

Another benefit of USB 3.2 is that it will work with USB 3.0 and earlier devices, and requires only a minor hub update to "assure seamless transitions between single and two-lane operation".
