Chinese tourists detained for giving Nazi salute in Berlin

Germany has strict laws on hate speeches and symbols linked to Adolf Hitler, a notorious figure in the Second World War, and his Nazi Party. This includes the Hitler salute, also known as the Nazi salute, which is illegal in Germany as well as Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and restricted in many other countries.

A 36-year-old and a 49-year-old were making the notorious (and now illegal) Hitler salute in front of the building while using their cell phones to take photos of each other.

Using symbols and gestures, such as the Nazi salute, can carry a sentence of up to three years in jail.

Air Force One won't be landing nearby, Marine One won't be flying them to the island and there won't be any airspace restrictions. While in the White House, the Obamas spent seven out of eight summer vacations in Martha's Vineyard.

Zhou Anping, counselor of the Consulate Division of the Chinese Embassy in Germany, told Xinhua that each of the two tourists have been fined for 500 euros and were released by the police.

In 2011, police arrested a Canadian tourist for giving the hateful salute while taking pictures outside the Reichstag.

Comedian Chelsea Handler called for thought crime laws in America in a tweet Sunday night, after two Chinese tourists were arrested in Berlin, Germany, for throwing up the Nazi salute. Jane Caplan writes that against her better judgment, she has been spotting Mussolini in this gesture or turn of phrase of Donald Trump, Hitler in that one. The two men are part of a huge wave of Chinese tourists that visit Europe every year, with the Mercator Institute For China Studies estimating that 2.2 million Chinese tourists will visit Germany in 2020, the New York Times reports.
