Consumer Reports Pulls Microsoft Surface Tablet Recommendation Over Breakdowns, Unreliability

Consumer Reports removes recommendation for Microsoft's Surface

Consumer Reports has announced it's pulling its recommendations on four Surface systems due to extremely high failure rates.

Consumer Reports reveals that approximately 25 percent of Surface product users had problems that started to appear after just a single year of use.

This motion includes both the brand new Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices launched mere months ago. Microsoft is relatively new to the hardware business, and this is the first year CR had enough data to estimate predicted reliability for the company's laptops.

According to Reuters, Consumer Reports found that the breakage rate for Surface devices is "significantly worse" thank other manufacturer's laptops and tablets.

The publication gauges reliability by surveying its subscribers about the products they use and own.

Consumer Reports says Apple has the most reliable devices. The differences were "statistically significant", we're told, which is why Microsoft lost the "recommended" designation.

Consumer Reports points to reported problems with touchscreen, issues at startup, and problem with freezing and random shutdowns.

Others said they had problems starting them up.

Remember Those Strong Password Rules? Forget Them Here's The Real Deal
Some of these include regularly changing your password every 90 days and using obscure numbers, characters, capital letters, etc. Burr thought back then if you replace a few letters with numbers and characters you'd create a harder to crack password.

For its part, Microsoft does refute the findings, not that we would expect them to say anything different, and says that their return and support rates differ from the findings in the Consumer Report Survey.

"Every generation of Surface surpasses its predecessors in performance and in reliability", a Microsoft statement claims.

When Microsoft held an event past year, everybody thought that they were going to announce the Microsoft Surface Smartphone but that did not happen.

Consumer Reports noted that the Surface Pro, whether in the form of tablet or with keyboard attached, performed very well in its lab tests.

The case is created to meet U.S. Military drop-test standards, a goal that UAG prefers for most of its products.

Still, the predicted reliability statistics, which are built on the survey responses, are important to users, the release said, and are a major factor in buying decisions.

To get at reliability, the Consumer Reports National Research Center surveys our subscribers regularly.
