Hammond and Fox vow transition will be no 'back door' to EU

Before the UK-EU Brexit talks resume at the end of this month, the government wants to fix the damage caused by summer headlines about Brexit splits.

In a joint "Sunday Telegraph" article, UK Chancellor Philip Hammond and worldwide trade minister Liam Fox - the two key ministers believed to be on opposing ends of Britain's future outside the EU - also said that the UK will not remain in the customs union during the transitional period.

The papers will outline the UK's negotiating position on areas such as our customs arrangements, including the issue of whether there should be a border between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Writing in the "Observer", he said: "People say we must respect the referendum".

"By triggering Article 50 in March of this year we leave in March 2019, what the transition period will look like is down to the negotiations", he said during a surprise appearance at Alex Salmond's show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The survey exposed that two-thirds of people would rather quit with no negotiations at all than settle for a soft Brexit which would compel the United Kingdom to stay in the Single Market and continue accepting free movement.

On his first official visit to Northern Ireland earlier this month, the Taoiseach even put forward his own suggestions for a "soft Brexit" - including the possibility of creating a new EU-UK customs union.

After weeks of cabinet infighting and damaging headlines, Hammond - accused by Brexit hardliners of trying to water down attempts to break free of the European Union after Brexit - and hard Brexit advocate Fox appeared to have reconciled their differences in a joint article for the Sunday Telegraph.

The Sunday Telegraph newspaper reported last week, citing three unnamed sources, Britain is willing to pay up to 40 billion euros ($47.1 billion) to the European Union as the bloc wants considerable progress on settling Britain's liabilities before Brexit talks resume.

"We will leave the single market, because there was a vote for change on 23 June and that is what we will deliver".

During their second round of talks held in July, the European Union and UK Brexit teams failed to reach an agreement on 22 of the 44 issues under negotiation.

The disclosure comes as Britain's Brexit secretary David Davis prepares to embark on a third round of talks with the EU's chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, in the Belgian capital at the end of August.
