Kenyan President Wins Re-Election. But Will Opposition Concede?

Mahama commends Kenyans for peaceful election

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta was on Friday declared the victor of Tuesday's presidential elections with 8.20 million (54.27 percent) votes against 6.76 million (44.74 percent) for his main challenger, Raila Odinga after a tense electoral process which was preceded by an opposition walkout.

Provisional results show President Uhuru Kenyatta with a strong lead, though opposition candidate Raila Odinga claims the vote was hacked.

We urge all parties and their supporters to peacefully and patiently await the IEBC's (Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission) announcement of official results.

Uhuru also thanked worldwide and local observers for their dedication in helping to ensure the election was free, transparent and credible.

Following Mr. Odinga's claims, there were minor skirmishes in a Nairobi suburb and in Mombasa but residents in those areas said that criminals wanted to use the opportunity to loot while others wanted to settle scores.

The election commission rejected the claims and said they contained basic mathematical errors.

As they wait for final results to be tallied and confirmed, many Kenyans are nervous of a repeat of the clashes that killed about 1,200 people after a bitterly contested 2007 election. "I therefore wish to declare Uhuru Kenyatta.as President-elect", said Mr Chebukati.

The additional verification process was agreed upon after 72-year-old Odinga alleged that hackers had manipulated the voting system after Tuesday's polls.

He encouraged political leaders in Kenya "to rise to the occasion" and spurred the leadership of that country to ensure Kenya does not "burn because of an election".

"And then if they have a concern, go through the rule of law, go to the court process and let the evidence be there for everybody to see".

Study Finds Smoking Marijuana Could Have A Surprising Health Risk

"We do not want to see any violence in Kenya".

They say the unrest broke out after Kenya's election commission announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta had won a second term, defeating Odinga. Both are sons of late independence fighters: Kenya's first president Jomo Kenyatta and his deputy, Oginga Odinga.

The election commission has until August 15 to release the final tally.

Odinga and the opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) have said they would only accept the results if allowed to access the election commission's servers to audit raw data from the country's 41,000 polling stations.

James Orengo, another senior NASA official, called the election process a "charade" and a "disaster".

Orengo said they would not seek redress through legal channels again, saying they had tried once and failed.

The two candidates in the poll belong to two of the country's main ethnic groups, Kenyatta from the Kikuyu, the largest, and Odinga from the Luo. He has not indicated how he will mount any challenge to the results in this election.

Already, though, tensions have boiled over into violence in some of the slums of Nairobi.

On Wednesday, at least three people were shot and killed in in violent confrontations across the country.
