US calls off rescue for three marines missing off Australia

Let us hope and pray that the USA military and its allies in the Australian Navy can recover the Osprey and its missing Marines soon.

Senator Payne said underwater search operations would begin on Monday evening.

The HMAS Melville detected the location of the crashed Osprey on Sunday, and an embarked dive team from the Royal Australian Navy is now beginning recovery operations near the site, officials from III Marine Expeditionary Force said early this morning.

The Osprey is created to take off like a helicopter and rotate its propellers to fly like a plane.

"The aircraft involved in the mishap had launched from the USS Bonhomme Richard (a Navy amphibious assault ship) and was conducting regularly scheduled operations when the aircraft entered the water", the Marine Corps said in a statement. An Australian navy ship arrived in Shoalwater Bay in Queensland state Sunday night to help the us military hunt for the MV-22 Osprey.

Twenty-three personnel were quickly saved, but three marines remained missing despite an air and sea search.

The 31st MEU - based out of Okinawa, Japan - comprises roughly 2,200 Marines and U.S. Navy sailors. The ship's small boats and aircraft immediately responded in the search and rescue efforts.

Special Operations Squadron. The MV-22 that crashed off the coast of Australia Saturday were attached to 3rd Marine Expeditionary Force based in Okinawa. The biennial exercise involved some 30,000 troops and 200 aircraft.

Australian authorities said no Australian personnel were on board.

"The Australian forces volunteered their help before we could even ask, demonstrating the deep ties and enduring nature of the alliance between our two countries, and the crew of the Melville", Davis said.

The service has said that the cause of the crash is under investigation.

Most recently, an Osprey crashed in January during a special operations raid on al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen, leaving two servicemembers injured.
