Migrant sea arrivals rising in Spain, could outpace Greece

Sunbathers in southern Spain looked on in shock and confusion as an inflatable dinghy packed with dozens of migrants washed up on the beach. The figure marks a significant increase to a year ago, when 13,246 migrants arrived in Spain in all of 2016, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

Arrivals have doubled in a year, according to the Spanish Red Cross that spoke about 7,400 people, including those who arrived by sea, who entered in the first six months of 2017, against the 3,600 reported in the same period in 2016.

A border guard suffered a broken leg after attempting to stop African migrants from breaking through a security gate in the Spanish city of Ceuta.

On the same day, 12 migrants arrived in waters off the Spanish territory of Ceuta in northern Morocco on jet-skis, with one - a 28-year-old man from Guinea - drowning before he could be rescued, authorities said.

However, overall numbers of migrants have fallen by nearly 60% from the same period the previous year.

"It's possible that Spain will outperform Greece this year", Mr Millman said.

Southern Spain is already struggling to control shipments of arms, drugs, and illegal tobacco into Spain from Morocco in an increasingly violent trade, with police saying the gangsters are now "winning nearly all the battles".

Some of the migrants who stormed the border are seen in the video below celebrating their success in making it to European Union soil. Spain, with 8,385 migrants - largely male Muslims - from #West Africa coming ashore, is now giving serious competition to Greece, where another 11,713 migrants have reached Western Europe through its borders so far this year compared to 13,246 in all of last year. It seems like it is safer to go through Morocco to Spain than through Libya.

The good weather over the past few weeks seems to have led to a sudden increase in the number of migrants arriving in Spain.
